Good Samaritan Family Gunned Down Trying to Help Stranded Driver in Montana
Posted 9:31 AM, July 31, 2015, by CNN Wire, Updated at 12:42pm, July 31, 2015

Trying to be Good Samaritans cost two members of a Montana family their lives and left their daughter wounded.

The triple shooting happened in the town of Pryor, Montana, about 30 miles south of Billings.

The suspect, 18-year-old Jesus Deniz Mendoza, is expected in federal court Friday.

The shooting

The family was shot when they returned to help Mendoza, whose car was seen stopped along side a road on the Crow Indian Reservation on Wednesday morning, according to an FBI criminal complaint.

The daughter said her mother “came to her house and told her that there was a guy that needed assistance.”

The mother, father and daughter then returned to where Mendoza’s car was parked, the court document says.

Mendoza pulled a gun on them and ordered them out of their car. He demanded money, but the family said it didn’t have any, according to the FBI.

The daughter said Mendoza told them to start walking away from the car. She heard a gunshot and turned back to see her father lying on the road.

The woman heard another gunshot and heard her mother scream. She was running and didn’t look back, the document says.

As the daughter fled, she felt blood running down her face from a bullet wound. She then heard another gunshot and felt a bullet hit her in the back.

The woman ran for help as Mendoza drove off in her car. She was taken to a Billings hospital for treatment.

Found in Wyoming

A Park County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested him several hours later and more than 100 miles away in Meeteetse, Wyoming.

Mendoza later told FBI agents he “shot the victims because he was getting tired of waiting around, and because the daughter laughed at him,” the criminal complaint says.

The FBI documents only referred to the family by their initials, but the Big Horn County, Montana, Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Tana and Jason Shane Jr., according to CNN affiliate KULR.

Mexican accused of horrific double murder, was legal immigrant

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Friday, July 31, 2015

The man accused of killing two Good Samaritans who tried to help him on a Montana roadside was encountered by immigration authorities earlier this year after a burglary arrest, but was unable to be deported because he had already gotten legal status, federal authorities said this week.

The horrific killing has drawn attention at a time when crimes committed by immigrants are a hot political topic, thanks in part to GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s claim that Mexican society sends bad elements to the U.S.

Jesus Yeizon Deniz Mendoza, an 18-year-old Mexican man, has been charged with the killing of Jason and Tana Shane, who saw him stopped on the side of the road Wednesday and tried to help him. When they showed up on the scene with their daughter, Mr. Deniz pointed a gun at them and demanded money, according to an FBI affidavit filed in the federal court case.

They Shanes said they didn’t have any money and Mr. Deniz started to walk away, but then changed his mind and shot the father, then the mother and then the daughter, who was by this time running away. She managed to escape, though not before being shot in the back, the FBI affidavit said.

Mr. Deniz told the FBI he shot the three people with a .22 caliber rifle because he was tired of waiting, and because he thought he heard the daughter laughing at him, FBI Special Agent Larry J. McGrail II said in the affidavit.

Mr. Deniz is Mexican, and the Obama administration deems him a legal permanent resident who entered the country legally on May 31, 2013 — though they didn’t say how he earned that status initially.

Crime amongst Mexican immigrants has become a major issue in recent weeks after Mr. Trump, in announcing his presidential campaign, said Mexico sends “criminals, drug dealers, rapists” to the U.S.

His comments have been challenged by Hispanic-rights activists who said they were offensive and incorrect, pointing to statistics that immigrants generally have lower crime rates than native-born Americans.

But a spate of recent high-profile murders with illegal immigrants as the chief suspects has sharpened the debate, and put a focus on American immigration policy — partly because the suspects have often had previous run-ins with immigration authorities.

Indeed, just a month ago Mr. Deniz was arrested by police in Worland, Wyo., on burglary charges. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were informed, but they couldn’t do anything because he was a permanent resident, and his crime didn’t rise the level of being kicked out of the country.

If convicted in the new case, however, he could be deported, ICE said.

“This individual does not have any criminal convictions, and, as a permanent resident, is not currently removable. Thus, an ICE detainer cannot be placed on the individual at this time,” the agency said in a statement. “However, ICE is closely monitoring this case and coordinating with local authorities. If he is convicted for a criminal offense that allows him to be removed from the country, after the completion of sentence, ICE intends to take him into custody and pursue his removal from the United States.”

Worland police declined to comment on the earlier burglary case, saying it’s an active investigation.

[[ ...but was unable to be deported because he had already gotten legal status, federal authorities said this week. ]]

I'm wondering if this "legal status" was the result of obama's executive order....?

Mystery, that is generally sound advice, but in a state like Montana there are vast wide open spaces where you won't see another human being for miles and miles. As a result residents are much more prone to stop and try to help someone with car problems than in an urban area where family, friends, or other assistance is not usually that far away, especially if the breakdown is in a rural area. Helping your neighbor, even if he isn't exactly your neighbor, is just accepted and expected conduct in places like Montana.

My heart goes out to this family. They wanted to help someone but didn't realize they were dealing with a psychopath. May the Shanes rest in peace and may their daughter heal quickly physically and from the emotional trauma.

Situations like this are tough for me. I am a good Samaritan. I believe that helping your fellow human being is what makes for a good society.

Unfortunately I began to resist the urge to help my fellow man or woman many years ago. Seems the predators figured out there are lots of people like myself. Makes for a great trap. I believe the predators refer to good Samaritans as 'suckers'.

My friends we live in a truly sadistic world and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. If you live underwater you carry oxygen. If you jump out of a plane you wear a parachute. If you live in this world you carry a gun...and trust NO ONE.

Burglary is not enough to kick them out? Then we need to lower the bar..

If only we had the cops in the movie "Minority Report", then we could have foreseen this future and stopped it long beforehand by pre-emptively kicking him out, even though at that time he hadn't done a thing.

Interesting footnote to this story from VDare:

The FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs are handling the investigation because the murders occurred on an Indian reservation and the victims were members of the Crow tribe.
