Ted Cruz: ‘Voters Would Be Astonished’ To Know What GOP Senators Say And Do In Private

Posted By Alex Pappas On 4:42 PM 06/29/2015

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz writes in his new book that conservative voters would be “astonished” if they knew what Republican senators were really doing and saying in private meetings on Capitol Hill.

“During my time in the Senate, I’ve been amazed how many senators pose one way in public—as fiscal conservatives or staunch Tea Party supporters, for example—and then in private do little or nothing to advance those principles,” Cruz writes in his new book, “A Time For Truth.”

“Indeed, if transcripts of our Senate lunches were released to the public, I think many voters would be astonished,” the Republican presidential candidate writes.

In the introduction to this book, Cruz specifically criticizes the Republican leadership in the Senate for how they dealt with the issue of raising the debt ceiling in early 2014.

“For months leading up to this moment, Republican leaders had pledged to their constituents that when it came time to raise the federal debt limit, they would demand meaningful spending reforms from this president,” Cruz wrote. “Rest assured, we were told, the Republicans would insist on it!”

But that wasn’t going to work, so the GOP leadership came up with another idea.

“For decades, the ordinary procedure in the Senate has been that in order to move to proceed to take up a debt ceiling increase, 60 senators must vote in favor of the motion,” he said.

Cruz said the leadership asked senators to agree to a 50-vote threshold for the debt ceiling legislation.

The GOP leadership, Cruz writes, wanted Republicans to agree to this so “Democrats would then have the votes to raise the debt ceiling on their own. We could all vote no. This way, we could return home and tell the voters that we had opposed raising the debt ceiling, right after consenting to let it happen.”

“Most senators seemed perfectly fine with the leadership’s proposal,” Cruz writes. “There were nods and murmurs of assent.”

Cruz said that for him, it “was too much.”

“I raised my hand and said, ‘There’s no universe in which I can consent to that.’”

He said he explained to the lawmakers: “If I were to affirmatively consent to making it easier for Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid to add trillions in debt—with no spending reforms whatsoever—I think it would be dishonest and unfaithful to the voters who elected me.”

His opposition to the maneuver made many GOP colleagues upset, he said.

“In the two years I’ve been in the Senate, nothing I have said or done has engendered more venom and animosity from my fellow Republicans than the simple objection I made that afternoon,” Cruz recalled.

Cruz explained: “What infuriated them was that by objecting to the unanimous consent deal they had cut, it forced those Republicans who wanted the debt ceiling raised to actually admit so in public with their recorded vote. It prevented them from misleading their constituents.”

Because he and his closest ally, Utah Sen. Mike Lee, refused to agree, Republicans would have to join Democrats to pass the debt ceiling increase. But this Senate vote was different, Cruz recalled.

“For this particular vote, however, the clerk was instructed not to read the votes aloud as they were cast,” he wrote. “That meant the votes could be kept secret, so that the leadership could work on getting enough Republicans who voted against the debt ceiling motion to quietly switch their votes without anyone knowing.”

It eventually passed with 12 Republican senators voting with Democrats.

“The final result was that President Obama, Harry Reid, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, with the active complicity of the Republican leadership, were able to add trillions of dollars to the national debt—a bill that we are passing along to our children and grandchildren—while doing nothing whatsoever to control future spending,” Cruz wrote.

Despite what many anti-conservatives here have said about Senator Cruz, he's all right in my book.

That doesn't surprise many conservatives who thought the 2010 election was going to make a real difference.

This particular voter wouldn't! Not at all!

He's the ONLY politician I have encountered in my lifetime at any level who is doing in office EXACTLY what he said he would do while campaigning. THAT alone writes a book!

More from Cruz's book, as described by The Hill
Quote
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a 2016 contender, reveals in his new book out Tuesday that he once watched pornography with Supreme Court justices while serving as a law clerk.

Cruz was clerking for then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist and recalls standing behind Rehnquist and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor in his book, A Time for Truth.

"We were in front of a large computer screen gazing at explicit, hard-core pornography," Cruz wrote, according to The Washington Post.

At the time, the court was considering a case regarding the regulation of online pornography. Court librarians reportedly set up a tutorial for the justices and clerks to show how adult content can be easily found online. The librarian punched in "cantaloupe" as an example, misspelled.

"A slew of hard-core, explicit images showed up onscreen," Cruz wrote, according to the Post.

"As we watched these graphic pictures fill our screens, wide-eyed, no one said a word. Except for Justice O'Connor, who lowered her head, squinted slightly, and muttered, 'Oh, my.'" ...

I'm never surprised just sad how they all both democrat and republicans treat the citizens of the United States. They give us the finger every day of their miserable lives.

Cruz has displayed several times that he won't back down from his conservative principles. I only hope he's raised enough campaign $$ to go against the hi-rollers.  Today is the deadline where the candidates have to file their financial reports with the Federal Election Commission listing contributions and expenditures.  When those results are made public, you can count on the media scrutinizing every candidate's report.

We already know that Jeb, Trump and Hillary will have no problem with cash flow and it will be interesting to see who will still be in; and then others like Walker still haven't committed.

Can't argue with you there! Except for claiming to be a Christian and to love America.

Obama has stopped pretending a whole list of things.

Yes. He has definitely stopped pretending to be a Christian. Either that, or he is the most Christian hating Christian I have ever seen.

He never really did pretend to 'love America'. I mean come on. The guy absolutely hates America, from its foundation, its history, its traditions, everything. Obama obviously hates everything about America, and he wants to tear it down in every way he can. He has made no secret of that. In fact, his known hatred for America was an attraction for Liberals, and one of the reasons they voted for him. I hope they got what they wanted.

But also his love of Islam is becoming more and more to the surface as are his fascistic tendencies. "The future will not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam!!!"

His love of Iran I think surprised many people and nations. He basically took a dump on Saudi Arabia, in favor of Iran. He hates, to his visceral core, the nation of Israel. He has no love for Egypt since they ousted his own personal crew, the Muslim Brotherhood. He has no love for Jordan, or the Kurds.

Having said all that, Obama has some kind of deep and irrational 'love' for the mullahs of Iran. No one really knows why? And he definitely wants to help them get a nuclear weapon in any way he can including transferring American nuclear technology to them. That is just bizarre. I have no doubt that they would have no problem with killing Obama if they could. And yet, he love them. Whatever?

So, yes. Obama is not 'pretending' anything anymore. And his overwhelming hubris, arrogance, and his seething need for 'revenge' against America will only get worse over the next year.

Buckle up everyone. It is going to be a bumpy ride.

He does love Islam, but he really would hate it if he - personally -  had to follow Sharia law. He loves the decadence of American infidel culture too much. Another beer here!

That is more common than most people think. Many/most of the hard core Muslims are not all that observant when they can get away with it.

They like the power that Islam gives them, and they like all the weird perverted sexual stuff, (having sex with eight year old children for example) but they are not so much in favor of all the religious crap they have to do.

Obama is no different than the rest of them. Do as I say and not as I do. That is one of the reasons that almost every time there is a suicide attack, it is almost always a "Muslim convert". The Muslims are not stupid enough to kill themselves. However, the converts are. The Muslim instigators never actually attack anything. They get others to do it for them.

Totally true, also. It isn't the leaders who are inconvenienced by the various restrictions. It's the mugs. Same in any power structure though, civil or religious.

In jail they are called a 'crash-test dummy'. You find somebody stupid enough to attack a guard or a rat you don't like on the floor. Believe it or not it is not hard to find stupid people when you are in jail. Let them take the rap. It is the same with Islam.

I know first hand that all of the "volunteers" flooding into ISIS are being put on the front of the front lines, in the most deadly positions possible, for that reason. The Muslims are not stupid enough to do that. They don't want to die. Better to send a volunteer or a convert. Let them fight the war. I would rather kick back, drink a few beers and watch internet TV.

The volunteers are being sent to positions with a life expectancy of less than 36 hours, while the Muslims hang back in the major cities.
