Photographs have emerged showing a Moroccan man accused of involvement in the attack on Tunisia’s Bardo Museum arriving in Sicily on a boat carrying hundreds of illegal migrants.
The images were captured on 17 February and show Touil Abdelmajid, 22, smiling alongside fellow migrants on an Italian navy ship at Porto Empedocle harbour in Sicily.
Abdelmajid was arrested near Milan on Tuesday on suspicion of helping to organise and carry out the 18 March attack in Tunis which killed 21 tourists.
The case has led to debate over how Italian authorities managed to lose track of Abdelmajid for almost three months after he arrived in Sicily.
Opponents of Italy’s centre-left government have seized on the case as evidence that jihadists can easily enter Italy by posing as migrants and that lax controls on asylum-seekers mean they have no trouble staying.
After he arrived in Sicily, Abdelmajid was photographed, finger-printed and given an order to leave Italy within 15 days.
It is believed he later returned to Tunis to carry out the museum attack, before coming back to Italy.
He was only arrested after his mother, a legal resident of Italy who lives near Milan, reported his passport missing in the wake of the Bardo attack.
Abdelmajid is accused of premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit attacks against the internal security of the state and other offences related to the museum attack.
A Tunisian official told the Reuters news agency that Abdelmajid is believed to have provided the weapons for the terror strike.
“(He) is a weapons smuggler … he brought weapons for the Bardo Museum attackers from Libya to Tunisia before the date of the attack,” the unnamed official said.
Despite claims that Abdelmajid’s movements expose gaping holes in Italy’s security net, the country’s interior minister says the arrest on Tuesday was a success for police.
“We are talking about the arrest of a terrorism suspect, about a successful investigation that was the result of good cooperation between several countries in the fight against terrorism,” Angelino Alfano told parliament….
