Professor Fails Student for Refusing to Condemn Her Faith

By Russ Hepler - 108 Comments · In Christian Nation, US

We all know how “intolerant” the “tolerant” left is. They cannot abide differing views other than their own. No place is this more evident than on American college campuses.

The “tolerance police” are the biggest fascists on the planet. A new example of this comes out of Florida. Both Campus Reform and WND report:

A professor at Polk State College has allegedly failed a humanities student after she refused to concede that Jesus is a “myth” or that Christianity oppresses women during a series of mandatory assignments at the Florida college.

According to a press release from the Liberty Counsel, a non-profit public interest law firm, Humanities Professor Lance “Lj” Russum gave a student a “zero” on four separate papers because the 16-year-old did not “conform to his personal worldviews of Marxism, Atheism, Feminism, and homosexuality.”

The law firm has called for a full, private investigation of the professor and the course curriculum.

The course description for the class, “ Introduction to Humanities,” claims that students “are under no obligation to agree with classmates, authors, or the instructor, in fact, the instructor will often occupy the space of ‘Devil’s Advocate’ for the purpose of lively discussion.”

“The point of this is not to ‘bash’ any religion, we should NEVER favor one over another, they all come from the same source, HUMAN IMAGINATION and [sic] they demonstrate that humanity is one,” a copy of Russum’s class outline, riddled with grammatical errors, says.

You know it’s not going to be good when a 10-page letter of complaint breaks off in the middle and says, “But wait, there’s more.”

That’s the case of a letter from officials with Liberty Counsel that was sent to Polk State College in Florida  about the “pervasive anti-Christian bias” a teacher, Lance Russum, imposes on students.

The letter demands a “full and independent review of Mr. Russum’s behavior and course content,” an appropriate grading of a 16-year-old student’s assignments, which earlier were given “zero” grades because of her beliefs, “a written apology” and assurances that future courses “will be free from such unlawful discrimination.”

“Mr. Russum should be fired, as he has forfeited all trust in his academic integrity,” the letter, signed by Roger Gannam on behalf of Liberty Counsel, said. If those things do not happen, “Liberty Counsel will take further action to prevent irreparable harm to the rights of our clients.”

It would be great if this was just an isolated incident, but the truth is that this kind of intimidation and lack of intellectual freedom is occurring on many college campuses.

This little “tyrant” of a professor thinks he is justified in shoving his narrow, radical, left-wing views down students throats.  Campus Reform shares more of the details:

In her essay, the student, who Liberty Counsel identifies as “G.L.,” argued that “it is a logical fallacy to make the assumption that Christian humanism’s goal was to ‘blend mythologies and make man the center’ simply on account of Michelangelo’s artwork or because Renaissance artists incorporate classicism.”

The student apparently received a zero on that assignment.

Another assignment allegedly required students to discuss how “fortunate” Martin Luther was to be born in a historical moment that allowed him to “challenge the mythos of the power structure of the church.” The assignment required students to write only about the humanism of Luther and his reformation—and students were instructed in bolded text to keep theology out of the paper:

“WHAT YOU MUST NOT WRITE ABOUT: 1. This is NOT about Luther’s theology

“2. Any quotes from his sermons or writings MUST be about humanism and how the reformation is in the right place and right time in history NOT some divine providence of the gods

“3. You must stay focused on the history of the humanism of Luther and his reformation IF You turn this into a theological debate or divine providence I will NOT read it and you will be given a zero.”

She failed that assignment as well.

This is sadly typical of much of what higher education has become in this country.  No longer are we training young minds to think; we are propagandizing them to become good little atheist socialists.  Marx and Stalin would be proud.

WND provides more information:

The situation arose over the attendance in a Russum class of “G.L.” a 16-year-old who is enrolled under a special program allowing dual enrollments in high school and college.

But during Russum’s class, “she refused to conform to his personal worldviews of Marxism, atheism, feminism and homosexuality,” Liberty Counsel said. For that, her assignments were given no credit.

“Professor Russum expressed blatant and pervasive anti-Christian bias throughout the class, such as the following essay question: ‘Why did Christianity, and its male gods, seek to silence these women [the nuns]?’” LC explained. “In other essays where G.L. refused to concede that Christianity was false, violent, or oppressive to women; that Martin Luther’s motivations for the Reformation were wholly secular; and that Michelangelo’s sculptures and paintings communicated that ‘same-sex relationship is NOT A SIN,’ Mr. Russum gave her a total of four straight zeros.

What is the college’s response to all this?  Campus Reform reveals  it:

In an email to G.L.’s parents, obtained by Liberty Counsel, Dean of Academic Affairs Donald Painter said that he had reviewed the materials presented in Russum’s Humanities 2020 course and “believe[d] them to be appropriate.”

Painter apologized that the student and her family found the course materials to be “distasteful,” but said the materials would not be modified.

What needs to be done now is for all alumni funding and student enrollments to drop sharply at Polk State College until they are willing to address this professor’s radicalism.

It is not that he holds such views; that is academic freedom.  What is amiss is that he is arrogant enough to believe that only his views are legitimate.

He is obviously a “good ” liberal – intolerant, bigoted, and self-important.  Sadly, he really has no real clue what teaching is all about.

The very first thing that "student G.L." should do, is start looking around for a better school of "higher learning" in which to enroll...
