WASHINGTON — Some of President Obama’s email correspondence was swept up by Russian hackers last year in a breach of the White House’s unclassified computer system that was far more intrusive and worrisome than has been publicly acknowledged, according to senior American officials briefed on the investigation.

The hackers, who also got deeply into the State Department’s unclassified system, do not appear to have penetrated closely guarded servers that control the message traffic from Mr. Obama’s BlackBerry, which he or an aide carries constantly.

But they obtained access to the email archives of people inside the White House, and perhaps some outside, with whom Mr. Obama regularly communicated. From those accounts, they reached emails that the president had sent and received, according to officials briefed on the investigation.

White House officials said that no classified networks had been compromised, and that the hackers had collected no classified information. Many senior officials have two computers in their offices, one operating on a highly secure classified network and another connected to the outside world for unclassified communications.

But officials have conceded that the unclassified system routinely contains much information that is considered highly sensitive: schedules, email exchanges with ambassadors and diplomats, discussions of pending personnel moves and legislation, and, inevitably, some debate about policy.

Officials did not disclose the number of Mr. Obama’s emails that were harvested by hackers, nor the sensitivity of their content. The president’s email account itself does not appear to have been hacked. Aides say that most of Mr. Obama’s classified briefings — such as the morning Presidential Daily Brief — are delivered orally or on paper (sometimes supplemented by an iPad system connected to classified networks) and that they are usually confined to the Oval Office or the Situation Room.

Well then, the Republican congresscritters conducting their investigation ought to know right where to go to get (or buy) the data they need!

On the other hand, I'll guess that O'er-the-Hillary actually took steps to protect her server....

If Putin has Hillary's emails, and if there's anything of significance in those emails, he owns the Clintons.

Russian hackers read Obama's unclassified emails last year: NYT
Reuters via Yahoo

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russian hackers who penetrated sensitive parts of the White House computer system last year read President Barack Obama's unclassified emails, the New York Times reported on Saturday, quoting U.S. officials.

"There is no evidence that the president's email account itself was hacked, White House officials said. Still, the fact that some of Mr. Obama's communications were among those retrieved by hackers has been one of the most closely held findings of the inquiry," the paper said.

A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on the report but the White House earlier this month confirmed the breach, saying it took place last year and that it did not affect classified information.

The New York Times said on Saturday the breach had been "far more intrusive and worrisome than has been publicly acknowledged."

It said that although no classified networks had been compromised, officials conceded that the unclassified system still contains highly sensitive information such as email exchanges with diplomats, exchanges about personnel moves and legislation, presidential schedules and discussion about policy.

Officials did not disclose the number of Obama's emails that were read by the hackers nor the sensitivity of their content, the New York Times said. It added that the president's email account itself was apparently not hacked.

The paper said that Senior White House officials had known for months about the depth of the intrusion.

Russia Continues Humiliating Obama’s Incompetent Cybersecurity

Posted By Daniel Greenfield On April 25, 2015 @ 11:11 pm In The Point | No Comments

If only Obama had put in as much effort into national security as he did on targeting political opponents, maybe this wouldn’t have happened. Instead his foreign policy as a joke, his smart power has deterred no one and our enemies humiliate America and him [2].

A published report says Russian hackers who penetrated White House cybersecurity last year read some of President Barack Obama’s unclassified emails.

Saturday’s New York Times report said the hackers, who also accessed the State Department’s unclassified system, did not appear to have penetrated closely guarded servers that control message traffic from the president’s BlackBerry.  Either Obama or an aid carries that device at all times.

But the report said hackers did gain access to email archives of people inside the White House with whom the president regularly communicated. From those accounts, the report said, intruders reached emails the president had sent and received.

The term classified, just as with Hillary’s emails, is debatable. The material was undeniably sensitive and if the hackers were just out for kicks, they would have posted them already. So this is a foreign government seriously compromising our national security, and it’s not even the worst such incident, compared to the amount of classified military plans stolen by China.

It’s largely forgotten now, but Obama claimed to have big cybersecurity plans in Term 1. Instead his administration watched over two major Russian humiliations of national security.

Bradley Manning, a mentally ill man, passed a good deal of information to Wikileaks, an organization either directly controlled by Russia or at least heavily infiltrated by it, considering the presence of Shamir, Ermash, or whatever he’s calling himself these days.

Edward Snowden did even more damage while outright defecting to Russia. At least some of the credit for that can be given to Putin’s successful cultivation of the Ron Paul crowd in the US who have begun acting the way that Communist fellow travelers did during the Cold War.

Despite our supposed constant eavesdropping, the ex-KGB bosses running Russia these days have run rings around us. And full credit belongs to a government which tried to push a reset button and show its flexibility instead of looking out for national security.

Being a cold and clever man, I suspect he'd view it as a lease with an option to buy.
