The state of Maine took a bold step forward in welfare reform. And it’s paying huge dividends for America’s taxpayers.
Late last year, Maine passed a measure that would require recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (aka “SNAP” or food stamps), to complete a certain number of work, volunteer, or job-training hours before being eligible for assistance. Otherwise, after three months, the benefits go away.
Maine Governor Paul LePage passed the measure last year and the resulting food-stamp users have dropped swiftly. Fantastic news!
According to Department of Health and Human Services data, 9,478 able-bodied adults without dependents received SNAP benefits on Dec. 1. That number dropped to 2,530 on April 1.
The biggest percentage decrease came in Lincoln County. The number of people receiving SNAP benefits dropped from 174 to 34, an 80 percent reduction.
The smallest percentage reduction was 55 percent in Knox County.
Androscoggin County’s able-bodied adult without dependents SNAP enrollment dropped by almost 74 percent.
Cumberland County’s enrollment dropped by almost 75 percent.
York County’s enrollment dropped by more than 76 percent.
It is common sense to require people on food stamps to work for their benefits. As it is, it takes three entire months for the benefits to go away. But there is an entire segment of the population which has become so accustomed to state benefits that they have no incentive to ever stop leeching.
There should be benefits for those who truly are in need. But if you can work, there is no reason why others should pay for your food. Maine understands that.
