WASHINGTON — Troops from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division will go to Iraq this summer, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.

In June, approximately 500 soldiers from the Division’s headquarters will begin to deploy to Baghdad, Irbil and other locations in the Middle East to support Operation Inherent Resolve, according to Defense Department spokesman Col. Steve Warren.

Most of the 500 will be stationed inside of Iraq, Warren said.

The deployment is slated to last nine months. The soldiers from the 82nd, based at Fort Bragg, N.C., will provide command and control of U.S. troops training, advising, and assisting the Iraqi security forces.

They will replace soldiers from the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, which are in the middle of their deployment.

There are approximately 3,050 American troops in Iraq participating in Operation Inherent Resolve, the military campaign against the Islamic State group.
