Kings Bay Marine Shot During Training

The Brunswick News, Ga. | Apr 02, 2015 | by Gordon Jackson

ST. MARYS -- A Marine at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay was hospitalized in critical condition after he was accidentally shot while preparing for a security training drill.

Lance Cpl. Dan Cary, 19, was taken to UF Health in Jacksonville, where he was hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot in the back when an M-16 rifle discharged as one Marine handed the weapon to another.

Capt. Stewart Coles, a Marine Corps public affairs officer in Camp LeJeune, N.C., said the Kings Bay Marines were preparing for a security drill when the accident happened.

Coles said it is Marine Corps policy not to release information about injuries, but news accounts said Cary was shot in the back and the bullet exited through his abdomen.

He sustained a wound to the back, causing extensive damage to his spleen, intestines and abdomen.

Coles said he could not speculate on whether Cary will recover from his wounds and return to active duty.

The accident occurred last week.

Cary's condition has improved in recent days and he is no longer in intensive care.

Cary was inducted in the Marine Corps on Sept. 3, 2013 and currently serves with the Marine Corps Security Forces Battalion Kings Bay.

Marines, like all members of the military, receive extensive safety training when handling weapons -- loaded or unloaded.

Coles said an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident.

Nobody has been charged in the incident.
