Twisted Teen Did The UNTHINKABLE When Suicidal Friend Texted Her

February 27, 2015 4:06 pm·

A Massachusetts teen was arrested after it was discovered she did the unimaginable after her good friend texted her, saying he was suicidal.

Michelle Carter of Plainville was indicted on manslaughter charges for the role she played in the suicide death of her friend, Conrad Roy III, in July 2014. According to the Sun Chronicle, Roy sent several text messages back and forth with Carter as he sat in an idling truck awaiting for it to fill with carbon monoxide, but when he asked for help, it was the last thing he received.

“Not only did Conrad tell Carter in several of his texts prior to his death that he was scared and didn’t want to leave his family,” Fairhaven Police Detective Scott Gordon’s report said. “She continued to encourage him to take his own life, and when he actually started to carry out the act, he got scared again and exited his truck, but instead of telling him to stay out of the truck … Carter told him to ‘get back in.’”

The case wasn’t highly publicized last year, but Carter was indicted on February 5 after police searched Roy’s cell phone and found the disturbing messages. Making matters worse is the fact that the teen girl went to great lengths to cover up her acts, even starting a charity fundraiser in her deceased friend’s name.

“Based on the totality of the investigation, it is alleged that Ms. Carter had first-hand knowledge of Roy’s suicidal thoughts,” said Gregg Miliote, spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. “Instead of attempting to assist him or notify his family or school officials, Ms. Carter is alleged to have strongly influenced his decision to take his own life, encouraged him to commit suicide and guided him in his engagement of activities which led to his death.”

After Roy’s death, Carter posted several messages to Twitter expressing her sorrow at his passing. She also held a softball game as a fundraiser for mental health awareness in Conrad’s name, in which she said “life can be tough, but helping others makes it easier” on the “Homers for Conrad” Facebook page.

On September 10, 2014, Carter posted to her Twitter page,  “National Suicide Awareness day, I wish more people understood. I love you and miss you everyday Conrad. Help others #WeCanEndSuicide.” Then on September 24, she retweeted the number for the suicide prevention hotline.

Carter, a senior at King Philip Regional High School, was indicted as a “youthful offender,” which means her case is open to the public and she could face punishment as an adult if she’s convicted, because she was only 17 at the time of the crime. However, her attorney said that she didn’t commit any crime and he expects the charges to be dismissed, according to MailOnline.

“I can’t understand why they brought the charge,” Joseph P. Cataldo said. “They’re trying to claim there is manslaughter, when they freely admit the boy took his own life. You can’t have it both ways.”

Carter was released on a $2,500 bond, according to CBS Boston. Her next appearance in New Bedford Juvenile Court for a pretrial hearing is on April 17.

It’s hard to imagine that anyone would ever betray a friend in such a manner, especially one who obviously needed help. Should she be convicted, I personally hope she serves a long sentence where she can think about just how wrong her actions were.
