Obama Doesn’t Want an Open Internet, but a Government Regulated Monopoly

Posted By Daniel Greenfield On February 25, 2015 @ 10:22 am In The Point | 21 Comments

New York City’s leftist mayor Bill de Blasio has an op-ed which begins by noting that four cable companies control much of the market and that Comcast and Time Warner are proposing to merge. Rather than expressing opposition to that merger, De Blasio shifts to an extended defense of Obama’s internet takeover.

Obama likewise pushes for “protecting” an “open internet” while golfing with the CEO of Comcast. One of these things is not like the other.

Comcast is the worst company in America. It’s now poised to become an absolute totalitarian monopoly inflicting its abuse on customers nationwide. It got NBC by paying off assorted minority leaders, including Al Sharpton.

It’s willing to pay off as many lefties as it takes to become the new AOL of the internet, a hulking monopoly that cripples service and holds back technology.

Will Obama oppose the Comcast and Time Warner merger the way that he opposes Keystone? Of course not. You don’t spend that much time hanging out with the CEO of a company whose dreams you’re going to shoot down.

The fix is in and it’s a revealing fix.

What Obama wants isn’t an open or transparent internet. He wants a cable monopoly for a terrible internet run by a friendly company that depends on government regulation and bribes. He wants control of the internet not for the benefit of the public, but to centralize power over it.

Obama doesn’t support an open anything. This is the man that a New York Times reporter called the greatest enemy of press freedom in a generation. This is the man who put a filmmaker in jail for making a YouTube video. This is the administration that bugged reporters and threatened critics.

The greatest threat to an open internet comes from Comcast. Obama claims to be protecting internet users from content tiers that would be inflicted by a cable monopoly. But the best defense against content tiers is a free market.

The best way to maintain an open internet is to prevent a cable monopoly. And the cable monopoly does not exist because of the free market. It exists because a lot of politicians have been bribed to make it happen.

Obama is promising to protect us from Comcast while golfing with its CEO. He’s promising to protect us from the end result of a cable monopoly that he is ready to make happen.

It’s like Al Capone’s politician friends promising to protect us against Al Capone.

With a monopoly on the market end and government control on the regulatory end, the internet dies. And it dies to the sound of idiots cheering net neutrality that will be tailored to whatever Obama’s Comcast pals want it to be.

If you loved ObamaCare, with its mandatory garbage plans and the end of affordable useful health care, you’ll love ObamaNet.

(Well, I've met a couple of women who have!)

But seriously, as a guy who doesn't quite understand the whole intricacies of what they're proposing, I'm kind of amused sitting back and watching the two sides fight this one out.
