Air Force Jet Forced to Land after Losing Canopy during Takeoff

Daily Press, Newport News, Va. | Dec 17, 2014 | by Andrea Castillo

An Air Force jet was forced to land at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport Tuesday after it lost a canopy during takeoff, a spokesman said.

The rear canopy came off a T-38 A assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base during a routine training mission, said Alton Dunham, an Air Force spokesman.

The canopy landed on the runway and did not injure anyone or cause additional damage, and the jet landed at the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport to avoid the canopy, Dunham said.

Neither of the two pilots on board were injured, and Air Force officials are conducting a safety investigation to find out what caused the canopy to come off, Dunham said.
