Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder tells Fox News that he will seek emails between the office of Gov. Jay Nixon and the White House to determine whether coordination was happening on Monday night when Ferguson was erupting in riots.
Kinder, a Republican, is one of many critics of the Democratic governor over the lack of response from National Guard troops after it was announced that a grand jury would not indict police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown Jr., 18.
Anticipating the grand jury's report, Nixon declared a state of emergency and announced he would deploy the National Guard. Ferguson was the scene of weeks of protests and violence after the Aug. 9 shooting.
Kinder told Fox News Channel's "Hannity" on Wednesday that he supported Nixon when he made the initial announcement, but when the jury's decision was reported Monday night, 700 Guard members were deployed only to what were deemed critical facilities and not to the downtown area.
Without the Guard, there were not enough police to prevent looting and setting businesses on fire.
Kinder first speculated on a Missouri radio show on Tuesday about whether the White House told Nixon not to deploy the Guard.
Nixon denied that in a Tuesday press conference.
Ferguson Mayor James Knowles on Tuesday complained that he was unable to contact the governor with repeated requests to deploy more Guard troops.
But Breitbart reported Wednesday that the White House acknowledged that adviser Valerie Jarrett was in contact with Nixon during and after the rioting.
"Remind everyone working for the governor and the executive branch that the destruction of emails is an offense punishable under our criminal laws, and they should not be doing that," Kinder told Hannity.
