Ayatollah Threatens to Raze US Bases Ahead of Nuclear Talks
In a sermon on Friday in Tehran, Ayatollah Ali Movahedi-Kermani, a top Iranian cleric, threatened “as our supreme leader said” to destroy the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Haifa as well as all American airbases in the Middle East.
Speaking to a crowd of thousands (see video below), Movahedi-Kermani said, "The Sejjil ballistic missile can hit and raze to the ground any place in Israel, as well as any American base in the region.”
Movahedi-Kermani is the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in the notorious Revolutionary Guards. The cleric’s words were pointedly interspersed with a repeating and well-coordinated chorus of curses to the West from the audience, complete with hand motions and out-stretched fists.
After each point the cleric made, the audience – young and old -- chanted, “Allah Akbar [God is great]! Allah Akbar! Khamenei is the leader! Death to those who oppose the rule of the Jurisprudent [Khamenei]! Death to America! Death to England! Death to the Hypocrites! Death to Israel!”
The timing of the sermon could not have been more obvious if the intention was to send a message to the United States and Britain who will gather with the rest of the world powers this week in Vienna for the last attempt at negotiations before the November 24 deadline to reach a nuclear deal with Iran passes.
“The other side had no choice but to conduct reasonable negotiations with us in a respectful atmosphere,” the ayatollah asserted. He vowed, however, that “Iran will not go back even one step from the R&D and the enrichment of uranium, and will not relinquish its full right to nuclear energy.”
After issuing numerous threats against Western targets, the ayatollah extolled Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities, which he maintained, “are intended for defense.”
“What blessing this glorious revolution has brought upon Iran,” he said, praising the country’s technological prowess and quoting from an Islamic text: “‘They thought their fortress would protect them from Allah, but the decree of Allah came upon them.’”
Speaking about Iranian missiles, he asserted that nothing can “detect them, let alone destroy them.”
Addressing U.S. President Barack Obama directly, the ayatollah said, “The U.S. knows that even in its war against ISIS, it cannot ignore the power of Iran. Obama says it was the sanctions that brought Iran to the negotiating table. You are wrong. Iran joined the negotiations to show you and the world that you are lying.”
