Michelle Obama is being urged by her husband’s true believers to move to California when she leaves the White House and to pursue the US Senate seat expected to be vacated by Dianne Feinstein in 2018.
The oldest member of the Senate, Feinstein, 81, has strongly suggested this will be her last term, Richard Turley will report in Orbmagazine.com on Thursday.
The first couple haven’t said where they’ll go when Barack Obama leaves office in 26 months, but Los Angeles is the leading contender.
“Barack could golf year-round, and Michelle could emerge from his shadow after 20 years and retake control of her own life,” a person familiar with their thinking told Orb.
“Remember, Michelle is a Harvard-educated lawyer whose career was more robust than Barack’s was when they met.”
California is the most appealing destination for the Obamas for several reasons. Hawaii is too remote, Illinois is a cesspool of political corruption, and New York is too dense with Clintons and Clinton acolytes.
A Democratic Party fundraiser told me, “No one will complain about carpetbagging because Hillary Clinton raised millions of dollars in California when she ran for the Senate in New York.”
The Obamas have many friends in Los Angeles, dating back to Barack’s student days at Occidental College, when he first left Hawaii.
As one cynic noted, “It’s a shoo-in. A ham sandwich could get elected on the Democratic line in California.”
