The family of a Navy SEAL killed in the Benghazi attack has filed a $2 million lawsuit against the CIA and the State Department.

Glen Doherty was killed in the Sept. 11, 2012, terror attack an the American embassy, and three other Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, died in the attack.

Doherty's mother, Barbara Doherty, filed the claim with the two government agencies, suing each for $1 million. But money wasn't the motivating factor: The suits will be used to force the federal departments to supply information.

“We know Glen would have done anything to support the United States and protect our freedom as Americans," she said, according to the Associated Press. "Two years after the Benghazi attack, our family has not received the symbolic justice all families of such American heroes deserve."

Doherty's family believes there was inadequate security at the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, as well as a nearby CIA annex.

The lawsuits were a last resort. The family has tried for two years to "reach a resolution" with the federal government, Michael Mortenson, a California attorney representing the Doherty family, said to the AP. Mrs. Doherty said the family chose to file its claim "reluctantly ... now proceeding to pursue those legal avenues open to us."
