"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim tribute to patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness -- these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. . . . reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principles."
George Washington

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."

I do admit that Christianity did have a violent pass, but unlike Islam Christianity at least went through reformation.
“If he will lie to or mislead his wife and daughter, those with whom he is most intimate, what will prevent him from doing the same to the American public? Private conduct does have public consequences.”
Franklin Graham

If we look at the past through the prism of the present, everyone was a barbarian.  If we look at the Civil War through the prism of the present, it was brutal.  I'm only saying at the time events occurred, what was done was normal for the time.  But as you say, at least Christianity moved on.
