With more than two years remaining until the 2016 presidential election, likely Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton is faring worse than ever in potential matchups against Republican hopefuls.
While the GOP has a number of possible candidates vying for attention, many consider it a foregone conclusion that Clinton will be the frontrunner among Democrats. In previous polls, she has enjoyed a healthy lead over any challenger from the other side of the aisle.
According to CBS, however, those leads are quickly evaporating.
Since February, for example, Clinton’s lead over New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie in a head-to-head matchup has plummeted from a whopping 21 percent to just seven percent. The damaging results were reported by a McClatchy-Marist poll released this week.
In other mock pairings, Clinton saw her lead against Florida Gov. Jeb Bush drop from 16 to seven percent since April. During the same period, her 14 point advantage over Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has dropped to just six percent.
Some leftist groups have cooled on Clinton in light of what they consider an excessively hawkish outlook on foreign policy concerns in Iraq and other hotspots around the world. Marist Institute for Public Opinion Director Lee Miringoff, however, attributed much of the popularity decline to her recent missteps in public appearances and the heavy-handed promotion of her latest book.
“Misstatements, starting with ‘we left the White House broke,’ aren’t headline grabbers,” he explained, “but they’re noticeable. With Hillary Clinton, there’s no preseason. She needs a Super Bowl-like performance from start to finish.”
He cautioned that Republicans are facing their own challenge in an effort to determine which potential candidates have a legitimate shot at the White House.
According to Miringoff, ‘undecided’ is the clear winner among the GOP crop of hopefuls in the eyes of voters who describe themselves as ‘strong Republicans.’
