FERGUSON, Mo. — Gun violence, tear gas and armored vehicles marked the first night of a controversial curfew imposed in this St. Louis suburb where the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager has kicked over a cauldron of frustration and anger.

What some hoped would be an evening of calm was instead one of chaos that ended with a shooting victim, seven arrests and an early morning heavy rain that finally helped clear the streets.

Capt. Ronald Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol said early Sunday a large force was deployed amid a curfew and protests in Ferguson after police received a report that a person had been shot by an unknown assailant.

Officers had learned through intelligence sources that a group of armed protesters were holed up in a barbecue restaurant. By the time police arrived, the shooting victim, whom Johnson did not identify, had been taken to a hospital by protesters. The victim is in critical condition, he said.

Tear gas was fired, Johnson said, after officers spotted a man with a handgun in the middle of the street. (Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. John Hotz initially said police only used smoke. Later, he told The Associated Press police also used tear gas. “Obviously, we’re trying to give them every opportunity to comply with the curfew,” he said.)

One person was shot and seven people arrested early this morning as police used smoke and tear gas to impose a curfew following the killing of an unarmed black teenager.

Officers are seeking the person who shot the critically-wounded victim after the 12am-5am curfew took hold in Ferguson, Missouri - eight days after Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead by police.

Police said their strong response came after people broke into a restaurant and took position on the roof overlooking officers, while another man flashed a handgun as armoured vehicles approached.

It came as a first photograph emerged showing Darren Wilson, the officer who gunned down Brown.

Some 200 defiant protesters remained on the streets of Ferguson last night after the curfew took effect - and a first photograph emerged showing the officer who gunned down Brown.

It's been in the works since Obama was elected.

They have been agitating for race wars from the day he got in office.

And now they've got one.

These people:

are not simple citizens participating in a grass-roots protest, they are "professional" agitators and anarchist cadres whose only purpose in life is causing strife, misery, and death by instigating and fomenting violence.

The guy on the left is a frat boy from somewhere.  Nothing else to do until school starts again?  Think maybe I'll start a riot?

I just listened to more than one hour of coverage CNN on XM Satellite radio, and it was very fair and balanced.
