Does President Barack Obama know if Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will retire during the next Congress?

On Monday, Obama said he needed Democrats to retain control of the Senate this year to help with his Supreme Court appointments in the next Congress.

According to pool reports from a DSCC fundraiser on Martha's Vineyard, Obama said, "We're going to have Supreme Court appointments, and there are gonna be a whole host of issues that many people care about that are going to be determined" by which party controls the Senate.

Democrats have been clamoring for the liberal Ginsburg to resign so that Obama can appoint her successor. And Obama would be able to appoint a much more liberal justice if Democrats control the Senate.

As Reuters noted, Ginsburg, who is 81 years of age, has "previously told reporters that she wanted to remain on the court until she matches the tenure of Justice Louis Brandeis, who retired at 82 in 1939 after nearly 23 years on the court." She said she would take it "year by year" as she "nears that marker." Ginsburg will turn 82 in March of next year.

Ginsburg even rhetorically asked Joan Biskupic recently, "So tell me who the president could have nominated this spring that you would rather see on the court than me?"

Obama has already appointed Justices Sonia Sotomayer and Elena Kagan to replace Justices David Souter and John Paul Stevens, respectively.

I respect Justice Ginsburg.

Sure, she is not my style, but she's actually a liberal - from back when that meant something other than progressive socialist.

As if a Republican senate would stop any of his SCOTUS nominees from getting confirmed.  Would that they would, but they won't.

It won't happen with the Republican Senate we have now.

"On Monday, Obama said he needed Democrats to retain control of the Senate this year to help with his Supreme Court appointments in the next Congress."

This is a scary statement.  Too much hinges on Dems retaining the Senate!  Republicans think they are going to breeze in and take over the Senate this Fall - and by all rights they should.  But this Republican Senate doesn't have any balls and will not fight for us.  They are taking advice for how to win elections from Democrats!  They bull-dozed over many of their constituents in the primaries and I don't see them taking advantage of Obama's daily f**k-ups to start a scorched-earth campaign to win the Senate.  PLUS, they have to win by a huge enough total to overcome the voting machine irregularities, the military votes that won't be counted, the boxes of newly discovered ballots in a poll worker's trunk - and the urban precincts that shed not one single vote for any Republican at all.

Lamar Alexander.

It really doesn't matter. What we're hoping for his the impossible. Republicans have to win, and convince people like me, that they are not all like Sen. Alexander. Look at the establishment types who post here. They're more interested in telling people like me how extreme and stupid we are, versus presenting any reason we should vote Republican, (except for the usual, if "we" win, then we can change things). Yep, change things the way Sen. Alexander wants to change things.

In summary, Republicans have to overcome the Democrat induced irregularities at the polls. They have to confront a hostile media, and we know they don't do confrontation. Then, they have to convince people they detest, people like me, to vote for them. Finally, if that all goes right, they have to somehow, somewhere, find a spine in order to block the Marxists that Obama will surely recommend for the court.

Not going to happen.
