Coulter's 'Idiotic' Response to Christian Missions
« on: August 11, 2014, 09:52:07 pm »

Quote
One of the essential lessons of clear thinking is to avoid specious “either/or” dichotomies.  Ann Coulter violated this basic standard in her intentionally sensational article, “Ebola Doc’s Condition Downgraded to ‘Idiotic.’"  She wondered why missionary doctor Kent Brantly didn’t stay in the U.S. to “serve Christ” instead of going to Liberia, where he “risked making his wife a widow and his children fatherless.”  In other words, in Ann’s opinion, Christian service is limited to one of two options: serve in the U.S., or abandon wife and children to “slink off” to do “heroic” “good works” in “Third World countries” that are “disease-ridden cesspools.”  Obviously to folks with Ann’s infantile perspective, such “idiocy” is merely to “impress” people like the NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof.....

Coulter, once again, is being obnoxious and (probably deliberately) off the mark, but she has a point.

It seems, far too often, that missionary work has become some sort of fad, something certain Christians (especially women) do as a way to check something off on a checklist.

I truly believe fewer people are called into the mission fields than actually go into them. It is not that we don't need missionaries and support staff. Indeed we do sometimes. Yet although there is some importance to feeding the hungry and caring for the sick, I don't believe that God requires us to chase down the hungry and the sick all around the world, something that it seems a lot of today's missionaries are doing, as if those deeds will somehow please God. The scriptures are pretty clear that we are to help those we encounter. Increasing the number of people in need we encounter is not going to increase God's blessing if God did not ask us to do so.

It's true, America is a prosperous country and doesn't need the kind of mission work that goes on in the Third World. Yet spiritual bankruptcy is running rampant. It has unique needs that money cannot fix. Yet even the brick-and-mortar churches are abandoning the lost.

Consider the ministry of Jesus himself. Only once did he minister to a Gentile, and then only because she had approached him. He focused on his own community, the Jews, who were corrupt and astray.

I disagree. Strongly.

While some people may seem to see mission work as "fashionable," they never last long in the field. The motives for every volunteer are different. Yes, there are a lot of middle aged "empty nesters" who volunteer. Give me them any day. Tough, cynical, pragmatic, and they take no crap from anyone. They are also incredibly comforting to have around.

The point of the article is to point out the harsh judgmentalism of Coulter.  Indeed, her biting criticism is getting worse the older she gets.  Instead of mellowing, she's turning into a shrewish banshee.

What a pathetic older woman she is becoming.  Will she die shouting at the world, all alone?

She has been coming out with some real crap recently, true.

And you explained it. She's starting to feel old and is trying to stay relevant.
