ESPN Suspends Host for Domestic Abuse Story

4:03 PM PST 08/09/2014 by Ryan Gajewski

Max Kellerman has been suspended for a week by the network after he revealed on a radio program that he once hit his then-girlfriend, THR has confirmed.

ESPN keeps doling out suspensions.

The sports network has suspended host Max Kellerman after he admitted Monday on ESPN-LA Radio show Mason & Ireland that he hit his then-girlfriend, Erin, several years ago. Max and Erin have now been married for 20 years.

"Max Kellerman will return to ESPNLA Radio and SportsNation on Thursday," ESPN said in a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter.

Max explained in the story that he and Erin were at a college party and were drunk at the time. Max said that Erin slapped him, and so he slapped her back.

Kellerman is the third ESPN host to be suspended in the past two weeks and the second to be suspended for remarks related to domestic violence. Stephen A. Smith landed a week-long suspension on July 29 after making comments about NFL player Ray Rice's suspension for assaulting his girlfriend. Earlier this week, Dan Le Batard received a two-day suspension for putting up a Miami billboard that mocks NBA star LeBron James.

Unless Kellerman was saying he wishes he'd hit her harder, I don't quite understand what offended ESPN. They frequently tie themselves into knots trying to be politically correct, though.

From another story:
Quote
... Sources told the Daily News that the suspension did not stem from Kellerman's domestic-violence confession, but from not adhering to ESPN guidance on discussing the Rice case. "My understanding is that it was part of a larger conversation ESPN had with all its on-air people," a radio industry source told the Daily News, adding, "Kellerman obviously didn't pay attention." ...
So you can't say anything about Ray Rice or LeBron James on ESPN now, no matter how much of a jerk either may be?

Just imagine the problems if Latrelle Spreewell were still playing.  Or Darrell Strawberry.  Mike Tyson would make interesting chatter.  Yeah, right.
