NC Sheriff Tells Residents to Arm Themselves

Bank robber Willie Sutton (1901-1980), when asked, “Why do you rob banks?,” reportedly said, “Because that’s where the money is.”[1]

In a similar way criminals with guns know who to go after: People without guns. Why take the risk with somebody who carries a gun? You might as well pull a gun on a person you know is unarmed. It’s safer, and most likely you want have to pull the trigger.

Lately, however, more people are arming themselves and it’s beginning to pay big dividends. Word is getting out that more people are paying attention to the arguments of people who know the statistics: More guns in the hands of the right people means less crime.

John R. Lott, Jr., author of More Guns, Less Crime, says:

“States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes. Thirty-one states now have such laws—called ‘shall-issue’ laws. These laws allow adults the right to carry concealed handguns if they do not have a criminal record or a history of significant mental illness.

*****

“Concealed handgun laws reduce violent crime for two reasons. First, they reduce the number of attempted crimes because criminals are uncertain which potential victims can defend themselves. Second, victims who have guns are in a much better position to defend themselves.”

These points have been made over and over again, so it’s not surprising that a sheriff from North Carolina is encouraging people in his small town to arm themselves because of an uptick in violence.

LILLINGTON, N.C. — The Harnett County sheriff expressed concern Monday evening about a recent spike of violent crime, and he’s even told residents to start arming themselves.

WTVD-TV reported that more than 100 people packed the sanctuary of the Spring Hill United Methodist Church Monday night for a community meeting on crime. There has been an explosion of violence and crime in the area, especially in the last few weeks.

Sheriff Larry Rollins told the crowd that the violence is fueled by gangs and drugs. He urged everyone to protect themselves, saying he doesn’t go anywhere without a gun.

“When I am out with my family, even though I am a cop, I don’t go anywhere without a gun,” Rollins told the crowd. “I mean it’s sad we have to have that attitude, but I am going to protect myself and my family. I want my deputies at your house just as fast as they can when you got a problem, but you better be able to take care of business until we get there if you have to protect your family.”

This part of the county’s landscape of rural life is quickly giving way to a population boom, and residents are worried. Several residents said they are afraid to leave their homes — afraid of the growing violence.

One resident said she goes to church, and prays but is still afraid. It’s a sentiment shared by other families as well.

“I think they are working hard trying to get solutions, for us which comforts us a little bit, but still, knowing it’s out there and knowing it happens every day, still doesn’t make you feel safe,” said resident Jamie Salmon.

Several speakers urged the residents to call deputies if they see something suspicious, and to keep a sharp eye out for themselves and their neighbors.

That line made me smile, rather hard. The most fervent prayer you will ever hear is "God? Don't let me miss."

Except in pre-civilization societies like the Middle East.  However, in Detroit the crime rate has dropped over 30% since the people were told  to arm themselves.  Its hard to believe Detroit is more civilized than many of the societies in the Middle East.

"Because that’s where the money is"

Same could be said for Home Invasion Robberies. Why rob homes that are occupied? Why not choose the home down the street with the lights out and the car gone? Why? - "Because that’s where the money is".  Career burglars know a neighborhood they been casing pretty good.  What houses have crap you couldn't give away at a garage sale, and what homes have nice stuff - which typically also have burglar alarms. Hit that home when the people are gone, at best they have 5 min to grab what they can, and leave a lot of highly valuable stuff behind them as they beat feet before the cops arrive.   But catch the people at home, alarm turned off, and windows and doors probably left unlocked - and all they have to do is incapacitate the home owners and they  have all the time in the world to clean the place out of all the valuables.  This from our own Sheriff - Asians are on the top of the list of targets, because burglars know many of them don't trust banks and keep their money at home.  We have had such robberies in my neighborhood and adjacent neighborhoods. Which is why I carry all the time at home now.

Good. A weapon don't do shit if you can't get to it rapidly. Wish more people had the sense to realize home is not in fact a freaking castle.

Exactly.  When seconds count, the police are only minutes away...

I don't care what city or neighborhood you call home, there is no defensive carry instructor in the country that would say shooting through the door is the right way to respond to  person pounding on it.

This same sort of incident happened to my sister, who at the time was living in an area often seen in the TV show COPS,  when in the weeee hours of the morning someone came pounding on her door.   Fearing for her safety, she didn’t open it, but also she didn’t shoot through her door.  Instead, while having her gun with her, she called 911 and yelled out the door “if you need help, the police are on their way”.    Turned out who was pounding on her door was a girl with stab wounds looking for help.   The girl survived, and the police said my sister did the right thing – not knowing what was really going on outside.  Your argument on the other thread is my sister should have shot the girl.

Slow Joe might. Then again, he's dim as a burnt out 7 watt bulb at the best.

Have whatever you need ready to hand and chances are you'll never need it. Your sister did totally spot on. Protected herself first, then others. As it should be.

I think it was the guy from The Best Defense TV Show who said, "The most succesful gun fight you could ever find yourself in, is the one you avoided."   Once you pull that trigger there is no bringing that bullet back. The consequences of what you just did will be heavy if you can’t prove in a court of law that you did the right thing.  This guy’s case was so bad I doubt any respectable professional witness would have answered the call to assist him.
