The VA hospital system has come under fire recently, ironically around the same time that Obamacare enrollments were initially pushed. The main concerns have been VA eligibility applications “lost” and long waits that have left many needing urgent care or having gone beyond care, as in dead. There have also been incidents of unwarranted VA police brutality on hospital premises.
One incident of excessive force for no real reason occurred in Oklahoma City’s VA Medical Center, and the victim of that attack, Joe Reece, has filed a suit against the U.S. Government. Talk about David and Goliath! Joe praised his doctor in the hospital, Dr. Sopukro Tienabeso, but complained to him that he couldn’t get along with the attending nurse.
But the nurse refused to leave the room, angering Joe enough to quip, “I am leaving and going to the car.” He got up but was stopped from leaving by VA Security Guards. When Joe insisted on going out the hospital door, the guards Maced him and threw him to the floor face down.
Joe suffered cuts, bruises and a concussion along with neck injuries. He was already suffering from cervical spinal stenosis and degenerative disk disease. The guards were cleared of wrongdoing by civilian police, because they were performing within the limits of their jobs. Translation: They were just “following orders.”
But why bother forcefully retrieving someone who’s dissatisfied and wants to leave from a hospital that’s in an overburdened system to begin with?
VA Security Guards kill a vet in California
Jonathon Montano had waited four hours for in the Loma Linda, California, VA hospital with an IV shunt in his arm when he decided to leave there and try the Long Beach VA Hospital.
He announced his intention to the VA staff, explaining jthat he’d keep the shunt in place so the Long Beach VA facility wouldn’t need to perform that procedure over again. He wasn’t happy, but he wasn’t violent.
He told his wife to get the car and come by for him at the hospital doors. But the VA staff notified those VA Police Security guard goons itching for action, and they acted like Montano was a terrorist with a bomb strapped onto him instead of a 65-year-old veteran with serious health problems.
He was jumped on, thrown onto the floor and restrained with a knee to the neck applied with full body weight.
His wife realized that something wasn’t right as she waited lengthily without seeing him. When she went into the hospital, she was told that her husband was in ER after suffering a stroke. An attending physician claimed that he had fallen down the stairs after experiencing a stroke. However, a nurse pulled her aside and explained what had really happened.
In fact, the stroke was caused by injuries sustained from the overzealous security guards , whose attack severed Jonathon’s carotid artery, an artery in the neck that feeds the brain, causing a clot and resulting in the stroke.
Jonathon died within two weeks. Mrs. Montano has filed a suit, not for delays or medical negligence, but for the police brutality, the subsequent lies and the way her husband’s desire to leave was handled.
The VA system’s overloaded bureaucratic mess
The VA healthcare system has been servicing thousands financially eligible ex-military personnel for general health since WWII and on. They’re not just young wounded veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan. Many of these older folks with health issues are getting angry about the VA health system today.
Some of the younger guys are traumatized, ignored and homeless, and some of them have committed suicide while their applications were being destroyed or ignored in favor of using the VA System’s personnel to help out with the Obamcare campaign. According to one whistleblower, Scott Davis, his complaints about using VA personnel for registering Obamacare applicants were ignored.
Davis learned, “We don’t discuss veterans. We do not work for veterans. That is something that I learned after working there. Our customer is the VA central office, the White House and the Congress. The veterans are not our priority. So whatever the initiatives are or the big ticket items, that is what we focus on.”
It’s estimated that at least 10,000 veteran eligibility applications were purged during the Obamacare registration push. Oh, by the way, eligible veterans registered in VA’s healthcare system are exempt from Obamacare requirements and penalties.
