President Obama admitted that we do not yet know whether or not sanctions against Russia are working. The President made the statement at his press conference Wednesday evening after NBC News White House Correspondent Chris Jansing asked him about the effectiveness of the sanctions.  The President also said that sanctions “are working the way they are supposed to,” leaving much confusion.

“Russia said today it’s going to ban food and agricultural product imports–that was about $1.3 billion last year. At the same time, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the amassing of troops along the border of Ukraine increases the likelihood of an invasion. Are sanctions not working?” Jansing asked the president.

President Obama answered, “Well, we don’t know yet whether sanctions are working. Sanctions are working as intended in putting enormous pressure and strain on the Russian economy…” He pointed to markets and estimates “in terms of capital flight” as proof that the Russian economy has come to a stop.

“We are doing exactly what we should be doing,” the President said. He added, “Sanctions are working the way they are supposed to be.”
