WH Adviser Dan Pfeiffer: ‘The President Has No Choice But To Act’ On Immigration

Posted By Brendan Bordelon On 2:14 PM 08/03/2014 In | No Comments

Top White House communications adviser Dan Pfeiffer claimed on Sunday that President Obama “has no choice but to act” and grant amnesty to as many as five million illegal immigrants — adding that the orders will be executed “at the end of the summer.”

Pfeiffer spoke to a skeptical George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” about the rumored executive actions to work around Congress and enact the president’s preferred immigration policy. Stephanopoulos noted that last fall, President Obama claimed he did not have the authority to go it alone.

“Doesn’t a reversal like that fuel the arguments of those who say that the president is overstepping his authority?” he asked.

Pfeiffer explained that “whatever [Obama] does in this space will not be a substitute for comprehensive immigration reform. Congress will still need to act.”

“But, because of Congress’ failure to fix the immigration system and to pass the supplemental appropriations will need to deal with the specific crisis on the border, the president has no choice but to act,” he added.

“And it’ll be in September?” Stephanopoulos later asked.

“It’ll be at the end of the summer,” Pfeiffer agreed.

It's pretty clear this is going to be a major campaign issue for the Dems.  Republicans should pick up the pace and turn it back around to the Dems.  Keep away from inflammatory language, spotlight the details of the bill just passed by the House while Reid had adjourned the Senate.  Show videos and pictures of the border chaos.  Stay away from denigrating Hispanics as a group.  Push the importance of protecting the border, and quickly holding hearings on the kids.  Talk about gangs working their way into the Country.  Emphasize  how Obama's secretly moving these kids into states and cities without any communication.

Most Americans want some type of legalization for those already here.  So either leave the issue alone, or agree to consider it as part of a larger bill focusing on border security and employer enforcement.

And as much as it may contravene one's "principles", show the positive side of Latinos, and their contributions to family life, religion and work ethic.  Keep away from slamming Spanish as that's not going to increase votes for the candidate.

But the main thing is to take the initiative away from Obama and the Dems right now, especially during this August recess when the townhalls will be an important part of this election cycle.

Well put.  Right now Obama has only threatened to "take action" but in reality there are limits on what he can actually do, and what even Democrats will not support.  The Democrats have a large number of constituent groups as well, and a big handout to illegals while bypassing the Democrat base is already no playing well all over the country.  Even the Unions are mightily pissed off, and a bunch of fresh work permits for millions of illegals is not going to please them either.

You're right about that Chief.  But Obama's painted himself into a corner now, and Reid by leaving town and letting the House pass a bill just may have handed the president the can of paint.  If he acts it will probably be outside the law; if he doesn't act, he looks weak.  The AFL-CIO is on record supporting amnesty for the 12 million already here.  One reason is that they are convinced they can unionize many of these workers.  Their lengthy plan includes getting rid of NAFTA and other such agreements, and forcing more unionization in all sectors.

In any case, expect the Dems to come out charging on immigration as they've done in the past on gay rights and women's issues.  But this time the Republican candidates can and should take charge of the immigration debate.  As others have said here, they need boldness and a willingness to stand for the promises they make.  But they also need to be aware of the popular support for comprehensive reform.

No, I don't believe they do.

Numerous opinion polls regarding immigration have been posted on this forum over the past week or so.

In those polls, a huge number of Americans say that they want the border re-established -as- "a border", and they also want the illegals who have come in recently to be sent home.

I believe the key to winning in November is to ATTACK illegal immigration from EVERY vector that is before us. And yes, this means subtle attacks on Hispanic culture as not being part of the "American" culture that we have held traditionally since the beginning of this country.

The reality of "Hispanic culture" can be seen just about everywhere south of the American border -- a socialistic or authoritarian mess, spiced up with gangs and cartel "culture". There is nothing good for America that can come from it. There is only California, writ nationwide.

I don't care if such attitudes "alienate" "the Hispanic vote". A pro-Euro approach will make the critical difference in those battleground states where folks are outraged and alarmed at what is happening in the border and blue states.

There is no use -- ZERO -- in trying to appeal to Hispanics in blue states, those states are lost to us anyway.

What will "make the difference" for Republican candidates in November is an increase of a few percentage points of "the white vote". Without that, the Pubbies lose.

It's why they lost in 2008, and it's why they lost again in 2012.

Tea Party House member Mo Brooks already gave the Dems their talking points on Friday.

He was dumb enough to declare a "War on White People" by the Dems.

Good God.  The Tea Party is an absolute joke at this point.
Trump has created a cult and looks more and more like Hitler every day.

You're right about that Chief.  But Obama's painted himself into a corner now, and Reid by leaving town and letting the House pass a bill just may have handed the president the can of paint.

Obama can't paint himself into a corner.  He'll just walk on the paint.  What we see is another red line got painted.  September.  yawn.  For what? Action!  yawn.  This President runs on his own time table.  When he says "We need to end the Bush tax cuts," he means "Extend them, and extend them again, and then make some of them permanent, and then we Must end the Bush tax cuts!"  I could easily see Obama coming back in Sep and saying a number of candidates have asked me not to nationalize this election so we've decided to postpone our action until after the elections.  Feliz Navidad

I think this is just talk.  September would be a terrible time to spring an executive order.  If it fails to have public support there is little time to recover by Nov.

I think Obama is trying to goad the unhinged in our party like Rep Steve King to keep talking about impeachment and cantaloupes.

It's a stupid play.  It gets money from the rat base but it also pisses me off and I'm assuming lots of other Republicans.  There are 356 bills on SML Reid's desk.  The House passed a temp fix for the border but Herr Obama says he wants to wave his magic wand and fabricate his own comprehensive law without Congress.  Am I to believe things are so desperate for Obama that he would give up his biggest bludgeon before Nov.  He's never been this desperate before?

Sorry.  I'm long past believing Obama will keep a promise/threat.  Obama has shown zero interest in the betterment of the black community, American's in general, much less the refuse of the 3rd world.  If it doesn't better Obama it ain't worth it to him.  An executive order amnesty is a high risk gamble for an unknown benefit.

Obama is at 40% approval.  If he gets down to 25-30% even the rats will be talking about impeachment.  Does he really think an overreaching blanket amnesty will add more rat voters than it will cost?  I wouldn't take that bet.

An enormous backlash could erupt from an unpopular amnesty for hospital clogging, disease ridden, job stealing, welfare cheating, criminals who crowd our prisons and schools.  The people outraged over this would likely vote for the squishyist RINO who suddenly realized a 20 ft tall reinforced fence with razorwire and spotlights might actually look kind of cozy around the land of the free and the home of the brave...ya know, if the sun was setting and there were some fluffy clouds.

Executive orders can be overturned by judges and legislation and elections and something else.

I guess we see what we want to see.  Take a look at Pollingreport which goes through all of the polls.  With the exception of a couple of answers on the most recent Gallup respecting this latest issue of the children, every poll shows most Americans want to provide some type of legalization for those already here.  And yes, they also want much stronger border security.  This trend goes back at least to 2006 when the Republicans blew it.

Which American culture are you referring to?  We held slaves for quite a while which we did from the beginning of this Country.  How about the women's' vote?  We kept that away from them from the beginning of this Country for over a hundred years?  So if you're going to use the age-old culture thingy, expect a tad of pushback from a lot of Americans.

So are you also willing to write off Florida, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico too?  How many states do you think the GOP can win with a "white culture preservation" campaign?

This is not the Messiah of  2008.  Even his usual supporters in the media are questioning him more and more.  The GOP finally laid a trap with their midnight vote on immigration after Reid had left town.  Obama's said many times he will use his pen, and now his most ardent supporters are expecting that.  He can't blame Bush; he can't lay it at the feet of House Republicans.  But they need to step up and challenge him as he's done with them.

It's not his election and he's hurting those running.  If the GOP continues to hammer him and the candidates on those 356 bills, it will take its toll.  And yes, stay away from impeachment and other direct assaults on Obama.

My point about the paint.

Obama's problem is how to use his pen to enact those things that are popular with Americans.  They are mostly upset over these latest actions with the kids.  But Americans do want legalization in one way or another for many of those here illegally, as almost every poll reflects.  But they also want some real action on a stronger border as well as better enforcement all around.  And any talk by the right about white culture with respect to immigration helps the Dems immensely.
