Tiger Woods Faces Uncertain Future After Reinjuring Back

Quote
AKRON, Ohio (CBSNewYork/AP) — Tiger Woods was at Firestone, and the scene looked all too familiar.

Except he wasn’t hoisting a trophy.

He could barely bend over to pick up his tee.

Right when Woods thought he was making small progress toward his return from back surgery, he suffered a scary setback Sunday when he was stricken with more back pain and withdrew after eight holes from the Bridgestone Invitational.

How bad was it? Woods headed home to Florida to find out if he could play the PGA Championship this week.

But as he stood next to his car, he struggled to even take off his golf shoes before his caddie drove him away into an uncertain future.

The lasting images of Woods at Firestone were not of him winning, like he did last year for the eighth time. They were of Woods wincing, hobbling and twitching. Those were the scenes from earlier this year when he coped with recurring back pain that forced him to withdraw from the Honda Classic and eventually led to back surgery March 31.

30-years treating back pain. I've seen it all.

Surgery should be avoided unless there is clear indication on CT or MRI of a specific lesion, one that is operable and that the surgeon has confidence is the source of the pain and disability. Pain symptoms alone are never a reason for surgical intervention.

Tiger's back problems could be a career-ender. I hope he has or will consult an experienced chiropractor.

I worked at a large hospital in the early days of MRI. One of the Radiologists told me, never, ever consent to back surgery for pain relief, unless the pain is beyond your tolerance. The chances are, surgery will just change the pain, not alleviate it.

I don't care for Tiger, but I give him his due. He was the most dominant golfer I have ever seen. The buffed up kids coming into the sport, smashing the ball, are a direct result of Tiger Woods. I wish him well.

I have always enjoyed the challenge of golf and the pleasant play on a sunny afternoon. But, it wasn't until Tiger that I began to watch golf on TV. Tiger Woods did much to make the sport accessible and yes, even exciting to the average viewer.

Damn good golfer in his day. The question becomes did the greatness of his youth, mean he would also fade at an early age?

His character flaw was tyical of people who attain fame and fortune, for a skill that pays so well.

Drink, drug, gambling, whoring about. At least they are not politicians.

My stepfather had back surgery. Said it was the worse discussion he had made in his life.

I saw on John Stossel's show over the weekend a discussion of back pain and a theory by a doctor named Dr. John Sarno that the majority of lower back pain is caused by stress and inner anger.  Having recently experienced some difficulty in this area, I decided to order Sarno's book.  The book gets 4 1/2 stars on Amazon and there are literally thousands of people who swear by Sarno's approach, so I am hopeful.

I wonder if Tiger's back pain is also caused by stress?  He comes off to me as someone who has anger issues, the way he swears all the time and is so secretive about himself.  I think Sarno would call these classic symptoms of someone with back troubles.

VM, I've read those books and believe the theory has some legitimacy.

If one believes in the psychosomatic connection between the mind (stress, anger) and the physical body (back pain) then they might want some knowledge of what can be done about it.

I recommend a book called "You Can't Make Me Angry" by Dr. Paul O.

http://www.amazon.com/You-Cant-Make-Me-Angry/dp/0965967212

A physician, who got clean-sober in his late 40s or early 50s and went on to become well regarded for his writings and influence on others.

I had the pleasure of hearing this man speak in 1994 and again in 2001 a few weeks before his death.

Once he had the gift of sobriety, he gave it back to others for his remaining days. Sadly his wife of over 50 years died shortly after him.

The fascinating thing to me about Woods, is how great he was doing, winning everything, flying high, making it with waitresses, etc. Then he got divorced and his whole life with his game immediately went straight to the toilet. Same story with so many people.

In today's throwaway culture divorce is thought of a no big deal. This is an incorrect perception. Not only is the financial aspect horrendous, but the psychological effects are devastating as well to everyone involved, especially the children.

I would not have expected it to effect his golf game, but it sure seems to have done so.

I hope they help me.  I am not having great pain but I was hitting golf balls a few weeks ago and my back went out on me.  I treated it with intermittent heat and ice, and stayed away from golf for a couple of weeks.  Now it is gone.  But I have been playing golf for 42 years and never had an issue with my lower back before.

After seeing Stossel's show I thought there might be some relationship between the new back spasm and my wife's cancer this year.  I thought I'd read it and try his therapeutic approach.

I have treated hundreds of patients with back pain and I have had a lot of back pain myself. I'd say I have a pretty good perspective on the problem. Not to take away from anybody else's theories, but most garden-variety back pain is mechanical in origin. Deconditioned muscles, wear and tear on supporting ligaments, facet syndrome, congenital anomalies, idiopathic or acquired scoliosis, degenerative change or osteoarthritis, is just a partial list of potential causes.

The spine is a single, synchronous, functional unit, but with hundreds of moving parts, some joints as tiny as the nail of your little finger. I doubt such a complex mechanical structure fails because of emotional lability.

Which is not to say that stress and emotions do not play a role in aspects of the condition. But the failure is usually mechanical.

I'm not a doctor but I can relate my own experience here.

I was troubled with on and off back problems for many years until I finally went and saw a specialist.  When I walked into his office - literally before we shook hands or exchanged pleasantries -  he asked me if I always carried my wallet there (left hip pocket). I replied yes. Always have done.  He said take it out and put it in your front left pocket!

I haven't had a back problem since and that was some years ago now.

I tell patients to get rid of that fat wallet from their back pocket ... and give it to me! Seriously, that's sound advice and I've been giving it to my patients for 30 years.

I wonder why all the previous doctors I'd seen never mentioned anything about it. Makes you go  Hummmm!

Medicine today is all about prescriptions. The old doc with the reassuring bedside manner who gave sound advice, is as obsolescent as a house call.

I know from my own history of back pain that following through on my golf swing is pretty near impossible. I found it interesting that at Firestone TW was able to swing freely on every single hole he played, even after the misstep in the bunker on #2. He didn't grimace or give the slightest indication whatsoever of pain until after after his tee shot on #8, unlike past tournaments where his wincing and limping were evident (whenever his game started going south). Just sayin'.

BTW, Nick Faldo made the exact same observation as I. When I posted it online, however, Tiger worshipper and ESPN columnist Bob Harig repeatedly called me an idiot!   Oops, now Tiggy shows up at the PGA championship three days later declaring himself completely pain-free. Watch out if he goes over par, though, and he'll break out the limp.

Report: Woods to open restaurant in South Florida
Ryan Lavner, Golf Channel
September 30, 2014, 12:40 pm

Tiger Woods’ latest business venture? Restaurant owner.

The Palm Beach Post reported Tuesday that the former world No. 1 will open a restaurant and sports bar in his new hometown of Jupiter, Fla.

According to the Post, Woods’ restaurant will occupy one of the spaces in a new $150 million entertainment complex at Harbourside Place. Though the developer said a grand opening is planned for December, it was not immediately clear when Woods’ restaurant would open.

Woods’ new bar could prove to be a hot spot for many PGA Tour players, who have flocked to South Florida because of the area’s championship-caliber venues and proximity to the ocean.

Restaurant owner is the latest venture for Woods, who turns 39 this fall. He’s also heavily involved in a golf-course design business (Tiger Woods Design) and the Tiger Woods Foundation.
