MSNBC’s Harris-Perry says securing border equivalent to racial segregation

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry, most famous of late for the racially tinged mocking of Mitt Romney’s adopted black grandchild, stoked more racial fires by comparing Texas governor Rick Perry’s decision to send a thousand National Guard troops to protect the border to the era of school segregation.

She actually makes a comparison between Rick Perry and a former governor who called in the National Guard to stop integration – but fails to mention that former governor was (wait for it!) a Democrat.

Watch the segment via NewsBusters, which also provides the transcript that follows:

Rick Perry was preceded in his call to send armed troops to confront children by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubas. He, of course, called the National Guard to stop the Little Rock Nine from their first day of school at Central High. The presence of children on buses integrating Boston schools in 1974 didn’t stop white crowds from confronting them with slurs and threats of violence.

[...]

Nor did it give pause to the adults who hurled objects and insults at 6-year-old Ruby Bridges on the day she became the first African-American child to desegregate an elementary school. And so when we look to children seeking safety at our borders and see instead an invasion to be defended against, a contagion to be contained. Or a drain on resources that we just don’t want to share, that is a side of history on which we are choosing to stand.

Orval Faubas, the governor she is referring to, was a Democrat who, during his campaign ran as a strong progressive on the platform of taxing and spending – a staple of today’s Democratic party.

Human Events also helps flesh out the history of slavery in the United States, with the help of one Jesse Jackson Jr.:

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D.-Ill.) explained in an interview with Fox News contributor Angela McGlowan:

“There is no doubt that the Democratic Party is the party of the Confederacy, historically, that the Democratic Party’s flag is the Confederate flag. It was our party’s flag. That Jefferson Davis was a Democrat, that Stonewall Jackson strongly identified with the Democratic Party, that secessionists in the South saw themselves as Democrats and were Democrats. That so much of the Democratic Party’s history, since it is our nation’s oldest political party, has its roots in slavery.”

How did the same Jim Crow Democrats who fought tooth-and-nail with segregationists to keep blacks on a virtual plantation become the party that now wins 95% of the black vote? Republicans passed Civil Rights laws, while Democrats wrote revisionist history.

Perhaps Harris-Perry should steer clear of the incendiary commentary, and just stick to what she knows best – cheap gimmicks and zero ratings.
