In a stunning security breach, the giant American flags at the top of both sides of the Brooklyn Bridge were replaced by white flags overnight, cops said.

The two new flags appear to be American flags that were painted over white — the traditional symbol for “surrender” — and were flying Tuesday morning from both towers.

The discovery was made sometime this morning.

Police are trying to figure out how someone was able to gain access to the bridge, which has patrol cars stationed on both sides and also has security cameras.

The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit will is replacing the white flags with American flags as they set up a crime scene, sources said.

An entity called Bike Lobby tweeted Tuesday that it hoisted the flags to signal “surrender of the Brooklyn Bridge bicycle path to pedestrians.”....

....Soon after the report appeared, the @BicycleLobby account claimed it was a parody account and mocked the news media for taking it seriously. Here are tweets from the Bike Lobby and others on the flags.....

I am going to bet though, it is just as dumb as the bike path hoax. That, or strange coincidence of flags recently added with some sort of water based dye that washed out in the rain overnight (if it did rain). Probably bought the flags from China.

Something strange is afoot in NY this morning…

The two American flags that normally fly over the Brooklyn Bridge were somehow replaced by white flags.

CBS News reported [3] that “a hint of stars and strips can be seen on the white flags,” and the NY Post [2] said that emergency services cops lowered the flags and packed them up with what appeared to be painting supplies.

As of now, no one knows who placed them there – or how they were able to breach security, scale the bridge, and place the flags unnoticed.

A plain white flag is an internationally recognized symbol of surrender or truce, as explained by WorldFlags101 [4]:


The flag indicates peace and is usually flown or waved in times of war. Soldiers who are carrying a white flag should not be fired on and in turn they should not fire upon anyone. If an individual negotiator is carrying the white flag it means he is unarmed and has come in peace with the intent to surrender or negotiate.

A white flag is made of any material available at the time and it is the symbol itself, not the flag, which signifies its meaning. A white hanky or white paper may be used to indicate the person’s intentions. People carrying the white flag are expected to remain neutral and are not allowed to participate in war-like acts.

The bridge connects Manhattan to Brooklyn over the East River, and has its base just a few blocks from City Hall and police headquarters in lower Manhattan.

Signs posted near the bridge state that it is under NYPD video surveillance (great job, NYPD!) so perhaps the mystery will be solved at some point.

Until then, curiosity about who placed the flags there and why will surely abound.

White flags – the universal symbol of surrender – were mysteriously placed on the Brooklyn Bridge on Tuesday morning, and nobody knows who is responsible. ABC News reports:

Authorities said that at around 3:30 a.m., the lights that illuminate the U.S. flags on either side of the bridge could be seen flickering and then going out completely.

When police investigated the scene, they found that the two American flags had been apparently bleached and large aluminum tins had been tied to cover the lights that illuminate the flags.

Whoa. The perpetrators were up on the bridge, which is considered a high-profile terrorist target, for quite some time.

“When [the NYPD's] Emergency Services went up this morning, the gates were still up and locked,” [NYPD Deputy Commissioner John Miller] said. “For someone to go around it and go up to the tower and have right size cover to put over the light, there’s some indication of pre-operational planning.”

Whoa, again. Pre-operational planning. Could this be a shot across the bow, letting the American public know just how vulnerable we still are?

The NY Daily News reports that a bicycle club joked that they had placed the flags there to signify their surrender of bike lanes on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams failed to see the humor in any of it: “If flying a white flag atop the Brooklyn Bridge is someone’s idea of a joke, I’m not laughing.”

This is definitely not a laughing matter. If whoever did this could get atop the bridge undetected and stay there long enough to take down, bleach, and re-hang two flags, they could also plant a bomb.

If this location is not as secure as we thought, what location might be next?

NYC Firefighter Claims Islamic Involvement In Recent Brooklyn Bridge White Flag Incident

New information has been released about the two white flags that replaced Old Glory atop the Brooklyn Bridge Tuesday morning. According to the testimony of a firefighter who assisted NYC police officers in reaching the rooftops where the flags were located, this is no mere act of vandalism, but a grim statement made by radical Islamist which hints at future terrorist attacks.

Sheldon Wayne Thomas is a New York firefighter stationed in Brooklyn’s 68th precinct. He accompanied officers Tuesday because of his experience as a climber, helping them traverse the cables to reach the flagpoles 277 feet above the ground.

“What NYPD Commissioner William Bratton failed to mention during the recent press conference–and what I believe the American people deserve to know–is that evidence found at the scene point to Islamic involvement.”

Continuing, Sheldon states, “When we reached the first flag, there were some items laying nearby. From a distance, it appeared to be a small blanket sitting under a book. Upon closer inspection, we found that it was an Islamic prayer mat, and a copy of the Qur’an respectively. One of the officers opened the book, and found that specific passages had been outlined, many of which related to the importance of moral virtue, and the rewards of religious Jihad. I was shocked when deputy commissioner of intelligence and counter-terrorism, John Miller, left these details out of his recent press conference. The mayor and his cronies may think they’re avoiding a panic, but I believe Americans, and New Yorkers especially, have the right to know what’s really going on in their city.”

White flags have historically been used by Islamic groups during war-time.  Mohammed often hoisted a white flag while going into battle, and the Ummayad’s continued this tradition of in Damascus and al-Andalus.

When asked about the other theories of the white flag’s origins, such as the possibility of it being a prank, or guerrilla art piece, Mr. Thormas says, “There’s no way just any ole’s person got up there and replaced the flags. The Brooklyn Bridge is under 24-hour police surveillance. The only way a group of men could have accessed this area was if they had government clearance.”

Could the white flags be some form of psychological warfare against US citizens? Are Islamic terrorists hoping to break the American spirit by keeping them constantly alert, and uncertain of their safety? These methods are often used with much success by cult leaders, and oppressive government regimes to exploit their victims. Perhaps Al-Qaeda and its sympathizers no longer feel the need to destroy our landmarks; Not when they can merely suggest how easy it would be to do so with stunts such as this.
