Christian Baker Forced into Gay Re-Education

Jack Phillips owns and operates Masterpiece Cakeshop in the Denver suburb of Lakewood. In 2012, two gay men, Charlie Craig and David Mullins entered his bakery and asked if Phillips would make them a wedding cake to celebrate their same-sex marriage. According to an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF):
“In an exchange lasting about 30 seconds, Phillips politely declined, explaining that he would gladly make them any other type of baked item they wanted but that he could not make a cake promoting a same-sex ceremony because of his faith.”
In the typical anti-tolerant world of homosexuals, the two men filed a lawsuit against Phillips for sexual discrimination. The gay couple could easily have said that they understood and then find another bakery that would accommodate their request, but gays can’t tolerate the concept that other people find their way of life to be offensive and against their religious beliefs. It also didn’t matter to the gay couple that Colorado does not recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states as legal marriages.
The Colorado Civil Rights Commission ruled against Phillips and not only ordered him to make wedding cakes for homosexuals regardless of his religious beliefs, but that he and his staff must also undergo two years of state approved re-education to endorse all views. Note that the Christians are to endorse all views but no one else is required to endorse the views of Christians.
Gary DeMar pointed out in May that this amounts to slavery in that Phillips and his staff are being forced to submit to a dominating authority against their will. DeMar asked some very poignant questions involved with the order of the Civil Rights Commission:
“What if a panel of Nazis ordered a Jewish tailor to make patches for Jews to wear that identified them as Jews?”
“What if a government commission ordered a black printer to print signs for a KKK rally?”
“What if a government commission compelled a catering service owned by homosexuals to supply food and beverages for an anti-homosexual conference?”
With the help of the Alliance Defending Freedom legal staff, Phillips is appealing the orders of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission to the Colorado Court of Appeals. ADF attorney Nicole Martin explained:
“Americans should not be forced by the government – or by another citizen – to endorse or promote ideas with which they disagree.”
“This is not about the people who asked for a cake; it’s about the message the cake communicates. Just as Jack doesn’t create baked works of art for other events with which he disagrees, he doesn’t create cake art for same-sex ceremonies regardless of who walks in the door to place the order.”
Jeremy Tedesco, ADF Senior Legal Counsel added:
“In America, we don’t force artists to create expression that is contrary to their convictions. A paint artist who identifies as homosexual shouldn’t be intimidated into creating a painting that celebrates one-man, one-woman marriage. A pro-life photographer shouldn’t be forced to work a pro-abortion rally. And Christian cake artists shouldn’t be punished for declining to participate in a same-sex ceremony or promote its message.”
“Jack, and other cake artists like him – such as those seen on TV shows like ‘Ace of Cakes’ and ‘Cake Boss’ – prepare unique creations that are inherently expressive. Jack invests many hours in the wedding cake creative process, which includes meeting the clients, designing and sketching the cake, and then baking, sculpting, and decorating it. The ACLU [which is representing the homosexual duo] calls Jack a mere ‘retail service provider,’ but, in fact, he is an artist who uses his talents and abilities to create expression that the First Amendment fully protects.”
The appeal is arguing that the Civil Rights Commission incorrectly sided with the wrong ruling made by a state administrative law judge. They argue that Phillips ‘acted in accordance with the provisions’ of the public policies and laws of the state of Colorado, saying they are:
“Protected by the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and by Article II, Section 10 of the Colorado Constitution from being forced to use their artistic talents to design and create expression they disagree with, here in the form of a wedding cake celebrating a same-sex union.”
ADF attorney’s previously filed paperwork claiming that Colorado’s ‘government seeks to impose a new belief system upon Jack [Phillips], one that is fundamentally at odds with his conscience and his liberty.’
Have you ever watched a science fiction movie where the people are brainwashed by some governmental scientists into becoming programmed into thinking the way the government wants them to think? The court ordered re-education of Phillips and his employees for the sole purpose to have them endorse homosexuality reminds me of those sci-fi movies.
How many more Christians will be ordered into re-education to force them to not only accept homosexuality and same-sex marriage, but to actually endorse it? Will we be ordered into gay re-education for simply speaking out against homosexuality, Islam or Barack Obama?
