Kirk: Obama should bring wrongful death suit against Russia

By Justin Sink - 07/18/14 02:55 PM EDT

President Obama should “bring one hell of a wrongful death suit” against Russian assets located in the United States following the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said Friday.

Kirk said such an action could “make sure there is a significant cost paid by Russia for this action of shooting down an international airliner with a weapons system that is directly related to the Russian forces,” in an interview with CNN.

In remarks from the White House on Friday, Obama said that the U.S. believed the flight was brought down by a surface-to-air missile shot from territory controlled by Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.

The president blamed the Kremlin for aiding the militants and announced that at least one American had died in the incident.

Kirk said intelligence suggested the separatists would not be able to carry out the attack without Russian assistance.

“That would mean that Russian armed forces are directly involved in this wrongful death of roughly 300 people,” Kirk said.

The Illinois lawmaker suggested Russian oil interests could lose “tens of millions of dollars” in such a suit.

President Obama stopped short of calling for a new round of economic sanctions on Russia, but said the incident “will certainly be a wake-up call for Europe and the world that there are consequences for an escalating conflict in eastern Ukraine.”

“It is not going to be localized,” Obama said. “It is not going to be contained.”
