Hamptons habitués hoping to fly out of town Thursday for a long weekend will find themselves grounded by President Obama’s arrival in the city for a super PAC fund-raiser.

Helicopter flights, including those operated by Blade, are being halted, as city air space will be closed from around 3 to 11 p.m. For some high-flying Hamptonites, the situation could foreshadow what might happen if East Hampton Airport no longer allows incoming flights — a very real possibility according to a new story in Jason Binn’s DuJour magazine.

“What the town plans on doing is putting restrictions on times for seaplanes, helicopters and jets,” the Eastern Regional Helicopter Council’s Jeff Smith tells the mag.

Because of a new legal ruling, by December the East Hampton town council, citing concerns over noise, will have the power to stop a large percentage of incoming flights, forcing travelers to land instead in Westhampton.

Smith added, “Opponents of the airport say people will just take the Jitney; they think these billionaires will get on a bus to come out here. That’s not going to happen.”
