South Korea Rescue Chopper Crashes On Street
« on: July 17, 2014, 10:29:40 am »
A helicopter that had been looking for victims from the South Korean ferry disaster has crashed in a residential district, killing all five people on board.

Two pilots, two rescue workers and one mechanic died when the helicopter crashed near an apartment complex and school in the southern city of Gwangju, 330km from the capital Seoul.

One person on the ground was also injured.

Moon Kyu-sik, chief of Gwangju City Fire Department, said the cause of the accident was unclear.

"A firefighting helicopter from the Gangwon Province Security Headquarters crashed," he said.

"The cause is yet unclear and as for injuries, there was one civilian included and (she) was evacuated from the scene."

A car dash-camera captured the moment the helicopter hit the ground.

The video shows the chopper explode into a fireball as it plunged nose first into a grassy area.

The aircraft was heading back to base after searching for 11 people still missing when the Sewol ferry sunk in April.

The vessel sunk in the East China Sea with 475 passengers on board. More than 290 passengers and crew died. Most of the victims were high school students.
