Rick Perry slams Obama border request

Texas Gov. Rick Perry criticized President Barack Obama’s $3.7 billion emergency funding request to deal with the influx of unaccompanied minors on the southwestern border, arguing that a boost in National Guard troops would help halt the dramatic increase.

“As I look at that piece of legislation, it is a very large amount of money,” Perry, a Republican, said on “Fox News Sunday.” He said not enough of Obama’s supplemental request goes toward border security resources, suggesting that the president needed to get “realistic” about the problem on the border.

Perry, who met with Obama in Texas during the president’s fundraising swing this week, called for a change in a 2008 anti-trafficking law that in effect makes it more difficult for unaccompanied children from noncontiguous countries – essentially, countries aside from Mexico and Canada – to be deported.

Still, he added that to “staunch this flow, you do not have to have a change in law” and called for Obama to deploy additional National Guard troops as a “show of force” that will serve as a visual deterrent for children who are now coming in record numbers from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

“They need to be right on the river,” Perry said. “They need to be there as a show of force because that’s the message that gets sent back very quickly back to central America.”

McCaul lays out options for GOP border response

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul signaled on Sunday that House Republicans will demand various policy changes in exchange for approving some emergency funding to respond to the crisis at the southwestern border.

Among those options include tweaking the 2008 anti-trafficking law dealing with unaccompanied minors that makes it more difficult to deport children from countries other than Canada or Mexico back home, McCaul said.

Republican lawmakers are also considering his border-security bill as part of their recommendations, the Texas Republican said. The legislation, which passed unanimously out of his panel last year, calls on the Department of Homeland Security to create a plan that ensures within five years, at least 90 percent of all illegal border crossings along the southwestern U.S. border are apprehended.

McCaul, a member of a House GOP working group that is crafting a policy response to the border crisis, said Republicans are looking for a “targeted approach” and that any emergency funding would likely run only through the end of the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

“Our view, I think, as House Republicans, is look, we’re not going to write a blank check,” McCaul said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Congress needs to act, he stressed, before the long August recess.

McCain calls Israeli restraint ‘admirable’

Sen. John McCain praised Israel on Sunday for what he called restraint in its response to renewed violence in the Gaza conflict.

“The restraint of the Israelis, in my view, is admirable,” the Arizona Republican said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Israel continued a massive air campaign in Gaza over the weekend, which resulted in more than 100 deaths. At the same time, militants in Gaza have fired more than 500 rockets into Israel. Israel says it's targeting rocket-launching sites and has been warning residents to flee before attacking. There have not been casualties in Israel, which McCain said is attributable to Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile defenses.

“Because there haven’t been more Israelis casualties isn’t because Hamas, a terrorist organization, hasn’t tried,” McCain said. “They are indiscriminately targeting civilians, while the Israelis are going so far as warning the people in Gaza on the pending strikes. There’s a dramatic difference.”

He praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his “patience” in handling the situation and for not giving in to pressure from the more conservative members of his governing coalition.

McCain also said the situation is “more dangerous than any time in the past,” partly because Egypt isn’t currently able to play the mediating role it has before.

McCain: Middle East is now ‘more dangerous’ than ever before

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Sunday said the latest of round of Israeli-Palestinian violence shows the region has become increasingly dangerous.

Given the latest conditions on the ground, the Middle East today is “more dangerous than any time in the past,” McCain said on CNN’s "State of the Union."

Israeli military forces appear poised to launch a ground invasion into the Gaza Strip, following five days of rocket attacks against suspected Hamas targets in the area. More than 130 Palestinians have been killed in the attacks and nearly 1,000 more have been wounded.

Israeli Defense Forces have told residents to evacuate the area “for their own safety,” another signal the campaign is set to enter a new phase.

McCain chalked up the deteriorating situation to a number of factors, including the absence of traditional power brokers like Egypt and Qatar who have helped cool tensions in the past.

He also blamed the President Obama’s foreign policy, saying U.S. influence around the globe “has never been less than it is today.”

McCain said there is “no moral equivalency” over Israel’s actions and that government forces have shown “restraint” in wake of shelling from Gaza.

He credited the Iron Dome missile defense system, which the U.S. helps fund, for saving Israeli lives.

“It’s not because Hamas hasn’t tried,” McCain said, adding the terrorist groups suffers more from a “lack of capabilities than intent.”

Its not just Hamas either.  Hezbollah started shooting rockets from Lebanon last week and the IDF has yet to address that.  So far there have not been many but Hezbollah has smuggled in untold numbers of longer range Iranian artillery rockets into Lebanon just like Hamas did into Gaza and the West Bank.

This whole thing is further evidence of just how big a failure whatever it is that passes as "the Obama Doctrine" really is.  John Fing Kerry has been dogging the Israelis over his ideas of "peace" and all accomplished was to keep the Israelis occupied while allowing Hamas and Hezbollah to rearm after the last time the IDF shut down the endless barrage of rockets.  Things are getting worse by the day and the body count is on an ever steepening upward curve.  The United States is a joke in the eyes of most of the world and there is no prospect of anything improving for the next 2 1/2 years....

Holder blasts Palin over impeachment call

Attorney General Eric Holder slammed former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin in an interview that aired Sunday, dismissing her calls to impeach President Barack Obama over his alleged “lawlessness” in enforcing immigration law.

“She wasn't a particularly good vice presidential candidate,” Holder said on ABC’s “This Week.” “She’s an even worse judge of who ought to be impeached and why.”

Palin made waves with her insistence earlier this week that Obama should be impeached, although those calls have been dismissed from senior Republicans including House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

Another top House Republican on Sunday rejected Palin’s call for impeachment.

“We are not working on or drawing up articles of impeachment,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said on “This Week.” “He has not committed the kind of criminal acts that call for that.”

Instead, Boehner and House Republicans are preparing a lawsuit targeting Obama’s alleged overreach of his executive powers – specifically the administrative delay of Obamacare’s employer mandate.

During the ABC interview, Holder said he did not believe that legal action would “have legs” and called it politically motivated.

“It's a more, I think, a political gesture than a truly legal one,” he said. “Filing a lawsuit against the president that has no basis is not going to improve the quality of life for the American people.”

Netanyahu: Zarif’s comments a ‘joke’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday dismissed remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who says Iran doesn’t see any upsides in developing nuclear weapons.

Appearing on NBC's “Meet the Press,” Zarif said he would “commit to everything” that would stress to the international community that Iran wasn’t seeking to make nuclear weapons, adding: “We don't see any benefit in Iran developing a nuclear weapon.”

Told of Zarif’s comments on “Fox News Sunday,” Netanyahu called them a “joke.”

“Of course, they’re developing nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said. “What are they developing … these enormous underground nuclear facilities if not for nuclear weapons?"

Talks are ongoing in Vienna over Iran’s nuclear activities, with negotiators facing a July 20 deadline to reach some sort of resolution to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.

Gutierrez on Gohmert: Never met an immigrant ‘that he hasn’t thought wasn’t bringing disease to this country’

Rep. Luis Gutierrez had some tough words for House Republicans on Sunday as he made his case to keep intact an anti-trafficking law now at the center of the debate over the influx of unaccompanied minors at the southwestern U.S. border.

The Illinois Democrat noted that well-known immigration hardliners such as Republican Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas and Steve King of Iowa backed the 2008 legislation to effectively make it more difficult for unaccompanied children from countries other than Canada or Mexico to be deported. The measure sailed through both the House and Senate that year.

Of Gohmert, Gutierrez said the Texas congressman “hasn’t ever seen an immigrant that he hasn’t thought wasn’t bringing disease to this country.” And King can’t help but put the words “immigrant” and “criminal” together, Gutierrez asserted.

“So when there were calmer times, we put the children’s interest first,” said Gutierrez, who said last week that he wouldn't vote for additional funding to deal with the border crisis if it rolled back protections for children in the 2008 law.

The Illinois lawmaker, the most vocal advocate on Capitol Hill of immigration reform, said the unaccompanied minors are fleeing dangerous circumstances in their home countries – such as Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras – and some policymakers are engaging in a “demonization” of the children.

“They’re going to continue to come as long as those conditions exist and we don’t fix our broken immigration system,” Gutierrez said.
