GOP hopeful’s 17-year-old daughter pregnant

GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy, who is challenging Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) in one of this year’s most competitive Senate races, revealed late Thursday that his 17-year-old daughter got pregnant out of wedlock and is due later this summer.

Cassidy’s campaign revealed the news with a one-paragraph statement to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, published late Thursday afternoon as the July Fourth holiday weekend began.

“Earlier this year, Laura and I learned we will become grandparents this summer,” Cassidy, 56, said in the statement. “Our children have been the greatest blessing of our lives and we welcome our grandchild as a joyous addition to our family. Our daughter now faces a more challenging future than her peers. She has our unconditional love and support.”

His daughter is a rising senior at a high school in Baton Rouge.

A campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to follow-up questions, such as whether the candidate’s daughter plans to marry the baby’s father.

Cassidy and his wife are both medical doctors. They have three children and live in Baton Rouge.

In 2008, vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin made similar news during the Republican National Convention, announcing that her 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, was pregnant and having the baby.

It's only news because he is a Republican and will be used to slander him endlessly.

If he was a Democrat, it would either never be reported, or used to bolster his campaign.

The reality is, 17 year olds are generally dumb and do dumb things.  No matter how well parents raise their kids, young people still act like idiots and often only learn after suffering the consequences of their actions.

Slander?

I don't think anybody cares about stuff like this, especially in a place like Louisiana. 

Better hide the kid after it's born;  Baby Fat might eat it.

I'm referring to the media in general who will always used a Republican (or their family's) "moral failings" to slander them and even the GOP as a whole.

That's only if they are allowed to suffer the consequences, and single motherhood no longer holds any consequences, it's ALL good these days.

And I agree with you, if this guy were running as a Dhimmie, he could use his daughter's underage sexual activity and impending single motherhood as campaign advertisements.

As far as the young woman is concerned - when did she declare her candidacy for elected office? That seems to be missing from the article. I'll admit - two parents who are both doctors and their daughter seems to fail to take basic precautions is not exactly confidence inspiring, even though accidents do happen and, as said upthread, the young are not terribly forward thinking.

We would all know when the YouTube video of the abortion went viral and the daughter landed a reality show on Bravo.  The show would be promoted by guest slots on the Veiw, the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, what ever shows they have on MSNBC, Sesame St, and Game of Thrones.
