"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim tribute to patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness -- these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. . . . reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principles."
George Washington

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."

Someone needs to give Whoopi and her ilk a history lesson. I'm of Irish descent, and my aunt and several more distant relatives came here as indentured servants. That's a slave with a time limit. My grandparents came here after they were married, but they came in steerage and moved to a location where a number of Irish had settled. Because Irish weren't popular with Americans. In fact, there were  want ads saying "Irish need not apply" as late as the 1950's. I have a lot of stories about how unwelcome the Irish were.
But those Irish immigrants were immortalized by having the "paddy wagons" named after them. (Does anyone still use that term? Or did pc correctness finally catch up with that one?)

I think most of the Irish got over it. I think Italian immigrants have similar stories to tell, but theirs don't count either.
