Poll: 55% say America's global Image worse under Obama-Clinton

 By Paul Bedard  | June 19, 2014 | 3:21 pm

Despite promises by President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to bolster America’s Image around the world, a majority of Americans believe that the country’s prestige and standing are lower than when the duo came into office six years ago.

A new poll from St. Leo University Polling Institute in Florida found that 55 percent of Americans believe the nation's global prestige has worsened, 34 percent “a lot.”

The poll, provided to Secrets, comes as the White House is struggling with multiple foreign policy problems: civil war in Iraq, terrorism in Afghanistan, war in Syria and a surge of illegal children from Central America.

It also follows a long effort by Obama and Clinton to rebuild faith in the United States overseas, a job Americans apparently see as unfulfilled.

It could also undermine Clinton’s bid for the presidency which is build in large part on her role as the nation’s top diplomat.

In the poll, even independents, 57 percent to 35 percent, see the administration’s efforts to boost U.S. prestige abroad as a failure.

The pollsters also asked if people believed the administration deliberately misled the public about the 2012 attack of the U.S. facility in Benghazi, Libya. Some 43 percent said yes; 37 percent said the administration didn’t mislead.

The Saint Leo University national poll of 1,016 people, including 802 likely voters, was conducted between May 28 and June 4, 2014. The margin of error is approximately 3 percent +/- with a 95 percent confidence level.
