The Pentagon has launched an investigation into the events surrounding the capture by the Taliban of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the 28-year-old Idahoan who spent nearly five years in the hands of Islamist militants.

Top military leaders are eager to learn of the circumstances that led to Bergdahl's disappearance and whether he deserted his post in 2009, as many of his former platoon members now claim.

To that end, the Pentagon said Monday that it had appointed Maj. Gen. Kenneth Dahl, deputy commanding general of I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., to lead the investigation, which is expected to begin after the Army concludes that the former captive's medical needs have been sufficiently addressed.

Here are four things you should know about him:

1. He's been an Army officer for 32 years.

Dahl graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1982 and was commissioned as a field artillery officer. He has served in Germany and Korea and was commander of the 212th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Sill, Okla., from 2004-2006. He also worked at the Pentagon as assistant deputy director for political military affairs for the Middle East and as deputy director of operations in the National Military Command Center.

2. He's a veteran of both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Dahl deployed to Iraq from 2005-2006 and “provided command and control of the International (Green) Zone in support of the United States Embassy, MNF-I (Fwd) HQs, and the Government of Iraq,” according to his official biography. He served in Afghanistan from 2010-2012 as deputy commanding general for the 10th Mountain Division and Regional Command-South, returning later in 2012 to help manage the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

3. He has a master's degree in social psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

It's one of two advanced degrees he holds. The other is a master of arts in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College.

4. His wife is also a war veteran.

Dahl and Lt. Col. Celia FlorCruz were sweethearts at West Point and married shortly after their graduation. She was the first in the family to deploy, as an Army helicopter pilot in the Gulf War, and served two more tours overseas after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. They have two college-age daughters.
