Graham: Iraq, Syria 'staging area' for next 9/11
By LAUREN FRENCH |
6/15/14 9:36 AM EDT

The U.S. should engage with Iran before the country gains power in the Middle East with the ongoing conflict in the region, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday.

"Iraq and Syrian combined are going to be the staging area for the next 9/11 if we don't do anything about it," he said on CNN's "State of the Union." ‘“If Bagdad falls, if the central government falls, a disaster awaits us of monumental proportions."

The Al Qaeda-linked group, called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, has taken over a portion of Syria and Iraq, citing new fears that the U.S. might need to send in airstrikes to stop the violence.

Graham said he supports airstrikes to aid the Iraqi government.

The South Carolina Republican, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the White House should quickly engage with Iran to ensure that Tehran does not see its position strengthen because of the chaos in the region.

"We should have discussions with Iran so they don't use this as an opportunity," he said. "They are in this; they are already on the ground. If Baghdad falls and the central government collapses ...Iran is the biggest winner.

Graham: Iraq prime minster should resign
By LAUREN FRENCH |
6/15/14 9:50 AM EDT

South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki should resign to help stop the ongoing conflict with a terror group in the Middle East.

"Stop the march on Baghdad. Form a new government. There are plenty of voices over there," Graham said on CNN's "State of the Union on Sunday. “He should resign. He is incapable of bring the Sunnis back into the fold."

Iraq is in the midst of a new ethic conflict. The Al Qaeda-linked group, called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or ISIS, has taken over parts of Syria and Iraq with the backing of Sunni Muslims. Al-Maliki is a member of the Shiite majority.

The U.S. is currently weighing whether to send airstrikes to support the Iraqi government. Graham said he supports the airstrikes to stop ISIS and blamed President Barack Obama's foreign policy decision for helping create the violence.

"How did we get here should be the question. Al-Qaeda in Iraq....was on their back, just about gone," he said. "They got what they wanted. The Obama administration wanted to say 'I ended the war in Iraq and I'm going to end of the war in Afghanistan. This is predictable as the sun rising in the east."

Gabbard: Obama administration should not meddle in ethnic conflict
By LAUREN FRENCH |
6/15/14 10:15 AM EDT

Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said the U.S. should not engage the Al Qaeda-linked group taking over parts of Syria and Iraq as airstrikes there are not in best interests of the U.S.

An Iraq War veteran, who served as in field medical unit, said the Obama administration should be wary of sending airstrikes to aid the Iraqi government in its attempts to stop the Al Qaeda-linked group, ISIS.

"You can't train away the core issue here, which is you have a Sunni versus Shia battle going on. You have Sunni commanders literally saying Sunnis soldiers will be defecting because of their displeasure with the Shia-led government," she said on CNN's "State of the Union."

Gabbard added, "We do have the fiercest, strongest military in the world. We also have the responsibility to very careful about how and where we use that military force. It is not in our U.S. interest to go and involve ourselves in the middle of what is a religious civil war."

Graham: We must work with Iran
By LAUREN FRENCH |
6/15/14 10:51 AM EDT

Sen. Lindsey Graham says the U.S. must quickly work with Iran to help stabilize Iraq before an Al Qaeda-linked group takes over Baghdad.

But the South Carolina Republican warned that the cooperation must come with strict guidelines for Tehran against seizing land in the southern part of Iraq.

"We're going to probably need to their help to hold Baghdad," Graham said on CBS's “Face the Nation," while cautioning that Tehran's goal is to "create a sectarian Iraq. To have a puppet in Baghdad that is a Shia-dominated government where they control the outcome."

"But in the short term, why did we deal with Stalin? Because he was not as bad as Hitler, in our eyes,' he added. "We're going to have to have some dialog with the Iranians that says let's coordinate our efforts but has some red lines with the Iranians."

The Obama administration is weighing whether to launch airstrikes in Iraq to help the government defeat the Al Qaeda-linked group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a proposal Graham said he endorses.

Romney discusses strategy for beating Clinton
    By AUSTIN WRIGHT |
    6/15/14 11:00 AM EDT

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney suggested on Sunday the best way for Republicans to beat Hillary Clinton in 2016, if she’s the Democratic presidential nominee, is to focus on her record as secretary of state.

He also said he wouldn’t be the one running against her.

“I’m not running for president,” Romney said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He noted he just held a summit in Park City, Utah, where he introduced potential GOP presidential candidates to his former donors. “Had I been running, I wouldn’t have done that,” he said.

Romney said the 2016 Republican presidential candidate should focus on Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state.
