Broken air conditioners in Kolkata have put an ancient Egyptian mummy's life in danger.

When air conditioners in a Kolkata museum failed, curators resorted to silica gel and insect repellent to keep an ancient Egyptian mummy from being ruined by the heat and humidity.
Sunil Upadhayay, preservation officer at the Indian Museum, said Monday that air conditioning had been restored after an outage of several days, and that the 4,000-year-old mummy had come through the ordeal in fine shape.
Over the weekend, temperatures in Kolkata in West Bengal, topped 35 degrees Celsius, or 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Usually mummies are kept at 20 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius, Mr. Upadhayay said.
Air conditioner breakdowns are common during hot and humid Indian summers.
Mr. Upadhayay said that there was never any immediate danger to the mummy. “Only if we don’t take care for long periods, decaying happens,” Mr. Upadhayay said. “Decaying will not take place instantly.”
