Emirates cancels order for 70 Airbus A350s
« on: June 11, 2014, 07:15:11 am »
Dubai's Emirates Airline has cancelled an order for 70 of Airbus's A350 wide-bodied aircraft, the planemaker says.

Airbus said the cancellation had followed "ongoing discussions with the airline in light of their fleet requirement review".

In 2007, Emirates placed 50 orders for the A350-900 and 20 for the A350-1000, with deliveries due from 2019.

UK engine maker Rolls-Royce said the cancellation would lead to a £2.6bn hit to its order book.

"While disappointed with this decision, we are confident that the delivery slots which start towards the end of this decade vacated by Emirates will be taken up by other airlines," Rolls Royce said.
'Game changing'

Airbus said it was "very confident" in its A350 XWB programme. It said it had 742 firm orders and it expected the order book to continue growing in 2014.

How does an airline miss something like this so badly?

"Uh, yeah, we'll take 70 of those $300 million planes.  Yes, 70 of them.  What's that?  Oh, yeah, include the undercoating.  And an extra key."

7 years later . . . .

"Never mind, we won't need those 70 planes.  Right, seventy.  Yes, all $21 billion worth.  Yes, "billion" with a 'b'."

How in the world do they underestimate their equipment needs by $21 billion?  Very strange, unless they're going to replace the capacity provided by these planes with ones from another manufacturer.

Didn't they build some kind of real estate project call "The Palms" which went bust, too?

This article is pretty good, about the wild projections of tourism, investment, travel etc.

I think 9-11-2001 changed the world's ideas about travel to exotic arab muslim lands.

They did.  It was a monstrous project to vanity and ego where they built a whole series of manmade islands.

The plane orders were perhaps derived mostly in relation to expected travel to the islands, and other grandiose development projections.

The world sort of said that was a direct contradiction, of the al Qaeda end of the muslim-arab spectrum.
