At least three people were shot Thursday on the campus of Seattle Pacific University, and police said they had a suspect in custody.

Earlier, Seattle police said on Twitter that a second gunman was being sought, but later revised their report, saying no other suspects were at large.

The exact number of victims, and their conditions, was not immediately clear. Seattle police said three people had been shot, but the Seattle Fire Department said on Twitter that medics were transporting four gunshot victims, with wounds varying from minor to life threatening.

The shooting, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., apparently took place at Otto Miller Hall, an academic building, Q13Fox.com reported.

The university issued a lockdown after the shooting, but lifted it shortly before 4:30 p.m.

Seattle Pacific University, a private Christian university, has about 4,000 students. The university sits on a 40-acre campus located in a residential neighborhood on the north slope of Queen Anne Hill, about 10 minutes from Seattle's downtown.

Latest updates say 4 shot.  Liberals are already very happy.

Let me guess:  ALL of Seattle Pacific U is a "gun free zone."

It sounds like a shotgun. "red shells" seen on the floor is one clue, and he stopped after 4 shots to reload which is when he was tackled by staff.   A shot gun the gun of choice for Joe Biden.

Seattle's gay mayor just spoke and blames it on the "epidemic of gun violence". No surprise there.  And that's all he said. Think he would have had a few words of praise for the brave student who jumped and disarmed the gunman, and save who knows how many lives.

They're already looking for ways to exploit it.  Watch for Washington to pass some new anti-gun laws which do nothing but remove guns from law abiding citizens and make liberals feel good.

What they are really hoping for is a shooting where 50-100 people (preferably all children) are killed.  If it happens in a "red state" then all the better.

An armed student took the shooter down. The hero was armed with pepper spray, but armed no less. And he used that pepper spray to subdue the shooter.

That seems like a very brave move to make.

Police sources told KIRO 7 that the gunman was obsessed with the Columbine High School shootings and had even traveled to the Colorado site where two student gunmen killed 15 and injured another 21 fellow students in April 1999.

Quick-thinking students jumped on a man who opened fire in a campus building Thursday at Seattle Pacific University, pinning him to the ground before he could reload, shoot and kill more people, police said.

One man was killed and three other people were injured, one of them critically, Seattle police said. A suspect, described as a 26-year-old white male who wasn't a student, was in custody.

The man was identified by police as Aaron Ybarra. Assistant Police Chief Paul McDonagh said the suspect would be booked for investigation of murder.

McDonagh said it appeared that the man — who was armed with a shotgun, a knife and an unspecified number of extra rounds of ammunition — acted alone, but he said officers were following up on the possibility that he may have had an accomplice.

Susan Gregg, a spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center, said four people were treated, one of whom later died. She said a 20-year-old woman was in surgery in critical condition, while two other people — a man and a woman — were in satisfactory condition.

The shootings occurred shortly after 3 p.m. (6 p.m. ET) at Otto Miller Hall, the engineering and math building at the private Christian college.

The gunman walked into the lobby and fired multiple gunshots, said police Capt. Chris Fowler, the incident commander. When he stopped to reload, a student security guard subdued the man by pepper-spraying him and taking him to the ground, where he was pinned by other students until authorities arrived, Fowler said.

According to twitter, the young woman in surgery is now in satisfactory condition.

Seattle gunman ‘wanted to kill as many people as possible’
By Associated Press via NY Post

SEATTLE — The man blasting away with a shotgun paused to reload, and Jon Meis saw his chance.

The 22-year-old building monitor pepper-sprayed and tackled the gunman Thursday in Seattle Pacific University’s Otto Miller Hall, likely preventing further carnage, according to police and university officials.

Meis and other students subdued him until officers arrived and handcuffed him moments later.

Police said the shooter, who killed a 19-year-old man and wounded two other young people, had 50 additional shotgun shells and a hunting knife. He admitted after his arrest that he wanted to kill as many people as possible before taking his own life, Seattle police wrote in a statement filed in court Friday.

“I’m proud of the selfless actions that my roommate, Jon Meis, showed today taking down the shooter,” fellow student Matt Garcia wrote on Twitter. “He is a hero.”

The suspect, 26-year-old Aaron R. Ybarra, has a long history of mental health problems for which he had been treated and medicated, said his attorney, public defender Ramona Brandes. Ybarra is on suicide watch at the jail, she said.

“He is cognizant of the suffering of the victims and their families and the entire Seattle Pacific community,” she said. “He is sorry.”

Meis, a dean’s list electrical engineering student, was emotionally anguished but not injured in the shooting, Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said Friday. He was treated there and released.

Roman Kukhotskiy, 22, who was in the building when the violence broke out, said: “I was amazed that he was willing to risk all that for us. If Jon didn’t stop him, what’s to say? I could have been the next victim.”

He said Meis is getting married this summer and has accepted a job with Boeing, where he has interned in previous years.

The leafy campus of the private, Christian university about 10 minutes north of downtown Seattle was quiet the morning after the shooting, with a service held at midday. People stopped by a makeshift memorial near Otto Miller Hall to pay their respects.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray identified the student killed as Paul Lee, a “Korean-American student with a bright future.”

The gunman had just entered the science and engineering building when he opened fire in the foyer. Classes were taking place upstairs.

Ybarra was booked into the King County Jail and appeared, wearing a protective vest, in a jailhouse courtroom Friday. A judge found probable cause to detain him without bail.

Ybarra was hospitalized for mental health evaluations twice in recent years, said Pete Caw, assistant police chief in Ybarra’s hometown, the Seattle suburb of Mountlake Terrace.

Officers encountered Ybarra in 2010 and 2012. Both times, he was severely intoxicated and taken to Swedish Hospital in Edmonds for evaluation, Caw said. In the October 2012 incident, police found Ybarra lying in a roadway.

He was arrested on suspicion of DUI in nearby Edmonds in 2012, said Edmonds police Sgt. Mark Marsh.

“We are so very shocked and sad over yesterday’s shootings at SPU,” Ybarra’s family said in a statement. “We are crushed at the amount of pain caused to so many people. To the victims and their families, our prayers are with you.”

Ybarra is not a student at the school, police said.

Late Thursday, investigators searched a house in the north Seattle suburb of Mountlake Terrace believed to be tied to Ybarra.

The victims included a critically wounded 19-year-old woman who remained in intensive care Friday after a five-hour surgery, as well as 24-year-old man in satisfactory condition, Gregg said. Their identities were not released.

Meis, who graduated from Seattle Christian Schools in SeaTac, kept a low profile the day after the shooting. An outgoing voice message at a phone listing for his parents’ home in Renton said: “We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time while we recover.” It solicited prayers for students and the family of the man killed.

Salomon Meza Tapia, a friend who serves with Meis on the board of a student engineers group, described him as a hardworking student who is “always super chill.”

“I am not surprised he was cool and collected enough to take action,” he wrote in an email to the AP. “I was in the building, and I can say he definitely saved our lives. I am thankful to be alive and thank God for Jon Meis’ courage and actions.”

“There are a number of heroes in this,” Assistant Police Chief Paul McDonagh said Thursday. “The people around (the gunman) stepped up.”

He added: “But for the great response by the people of Seattle Pacific, this incident might have been much more tragic.”

Ybarra’s friend Zack McKinley described him as “super happy and friendly,” The Seattle Times reported.

McKinley said the attack was puzzling because Ybarra was happy to have just started a job bagging groceries. Ybarra could get emotionally low but had a good group of friends, McKinley said.

McDonagh said detectives are working to determine the gunman’s motive or intended target.
