'Humbled' Obama leads emotional D-day tribute to veterans

A "humbled" US President Barack Obama led an emotional tribute on Friday to the thousands of troops who gave their lives to liberate Europe from Nazism, on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings that "shaped the security and well-being of all posterity."

Speaking at Omaha Beach in front of veterans resplendent in military uniforms complete with medals glittering in the sun, Obama said that their sacrifice and bravery had breached "Hitler's Wall" and secured today's era of democracy and freedom.

"By the end of that longest day, this beach had been fought, lost, refought and won -- a piece of Europe once again liberated and free. Hitler's Wall was breached, letting loose Patton's Army to pour into France," said a visibly moved Obama in a speech interrupted by a lengthy standing ovation.

"Gentlemen, we are truly humbled by your presence today," he told the veterans, many of whom were confined to wheelchairs and, well into their 80s, were likely marking the anniversary of that historic day for the last time.

"Omaha -- Normandy -- this was democracy's beachhead. And our victory in that war decided not just a century, but shaped the security and well-being of all posterity."

After his speech, Obama warmly embraced a stooped veteran almost half his size before bowing his head alongside French President Francois Hollande at a wreath commemorating the thousands that fell on June 6, 1944.

The two leaders then stood, hands on heart, with saluting veterans standing to attention behind them as a lone bugler sounded out and jets roared a fly-past through a gloriously blue sky.

For his part, Hollande said France would "never forget what it owes the United State."

"This day, which began in chaos and fire, would end in blood and tears, tears and pain, tears and joy at the end of 24 hours that changed the world and forever marked Normandy," he said as he opened the ceremonies.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, dressed in a lime green coat and matching hat, led a service at Bayeux cemetery where nearly 5,000 Commonwealth troops are buried.

- 'Diplomatic deep-freeze' -

Some 20 heads of states, royals and prime ministers were to mingle with veterans throughout the day at ceremonies on the beaches of northern France, where the biggest amphibious assault in history was launched in 1944.

Dignitaries -- including the queen, who at the age of 88 is making a now rare foreign trip, and sparring world leaders Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin -- will have lunch together at a grand chateau before heading to the beaches for a solemn international ceremony.

The D-Day ceremonies will give world leaders feuding over the Ukraine crisis a rare common purpose but the diplomatic wrangling over the worst East-West confrontation since the Cold War started in earnest on Thursday and continued throughout the anniversary.

Putin has been in the diplomatic deep-freeze since Russia's annexation of Crimea in March and held his first meeting with Western leaders since then -- a bilateral with Britain's David Cameron and a late-night meal with French President Francois Hollande.

Paris was the centre of a frenzied bout of gastro-diplomacy late on Thursday, as Hollande gobbled down a rushed dinner with Obama before hosting the Russian leader for 'supper' at the Elysee Palace.

Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel continued the shuttle diplomacy Friday in northern France as French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Hollande had told the Kremlin strongman Ukraine was descending into "virtually all-out war" and stressed the urgent need for a truce.

Obama was not scheduled to meet Putin officially but told reporters after a meeting of the group of seven rich countries in Brussels that he had "no doubt that I'll see Mr Putin."

For his part, Putin has stressed that he does not wish to avoid anyone and may hold talks with Ukraine's president-elect Petro Poroshenko.

- 'A hairy time' -

Away from the diplomatic dance, veterans marked the occasion with low-key humility.

One British veteran, 89-year-old Ken Godfrey, was applauded by well-wishers who shouted "bravo" and "thank you" as, medals clinking on his chest, he walked the mile-long path to Bayeux cemetery.

"My main memory is wading through the sea with water up to my chest," he told AFP. "But I don't like to talk about the fighting. If people ask, I just say we had a hairy time. But I'm lucky that I survived."

Bob Cowper, a 91-year-old wheelchair-bound Australian night fighter pilot, met his current prime minister Tony Abbott at the Bayeux ceremonies and told AFP that he flew over the beaches on D-Day as the fighting raged below.

"Looking down, even though we were making a contribution, I remember feeling empathy for all the poor buggers fighting on the ground."

It was Cowper's first trip back to the beaches where he saw so many comrades cut down but he beamed with pride at being present at the ceremonies.

"It's wonderful as an old man of 91 - it's like coming home."

Obama Honors Veterans in D-Day 70th Anniversary Ceremonies
COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France June 6, 2014

On the 70th anniversary of D-Day, President Obama paid tribute to the World War II veterans who partook in the mission that marked a turning point in the war and defined a generation.

“These men waged war so that we might know peace. They sacrificed so that we might be free. They fought in hopes of a day when we’d no longer need to fight. We are grateful to them,” President Obama said to sustained applause at the Normandy American Cemetery.

“It was here, on these shores, that the tide was turned in that common struggle for freedom,” Obama said. “What more powerful manifestation of America’s commitment to human freedom than the sight of wave after wave of young men boarding those boats to liberate people they’d never met?”

With World War II veterans seated behind him, the president described the tense scenes of the day when over 150,000 allied troops invaded the shores of Normandy 70 years ago.

“If prayer were made of sound, the skies over England that night would have deafened the world,” the president said. “Captains paced their decks. Pilots tapped their gauges. Commanders pored over maps, fully aware that for all the months of meticulous planning, everything could go wrong: the winds, the tides, the element of surprise – and above all, the audacious bet that what waited on the other side of the Channel would compel men not to shrink away, but to charge ahead.”

“Fresh-faced GIs rubbed trinkets, kissed pictures of sweethearts, checked and re-checked their equipment. ‘God,’ asked one, ‘Give me guts.’ And in the pre-dawn hours, planes rumbled down runways; gliders and paratroopers slipped through the sky; giant screws began to turn on an armada that looked like more ships than sea. And more than 150,000 souls set off towards this tiny sliver of sand upon which hung more than the fate of a war, but the course of human history,” he said.

President Obama tied the commitment of the World War II veterans to the service of the 9/11 generation.

“This 9/11 Generation of service members – they, too, felt some tug; they answered some call; they said ‘I’ll go.’ They too chose to serve a cause that’s greater than self; many even after they knew they’d be sent into harm’s way. And for more than a decade, they have endured tour after tour,” he said.

Also in attendance was Sergeant First Class Cory Remsburg, the severely wounded Army Ranger that President Obama honored at the State of the Union in January.

When the speech concluded, President Obama shook hands with veterans before laying a wreath in honor of the veterans who served and troops currently serving with French President Francois Hollande. It was followed by a 21-gun salute, the playing of Taps, and a military flyover.

Following the ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery, President Obama will attend a luncheon for heads of state at Chateau de Benouville, where Russian President Vladimir Putin will be in attendance. Later in the afternoon, President Obama will attend the international ceremony at Sword Beach.
I wonder who wrote his speech. Rubbing trinkets?

Obama takes D-Day poke at 'instant commentary'
 The Oval
David Jackson, USA TODAY 6:37 a.m. EDT June 6, 2014
Quote
Even on D-Day, President Obama couldn't resist taking a poke at the modern media.

In his speech Friday at Normandy, France, Obama said that things didn't always go well on June 6, 1944; at one point, he noted, Gen. Omar Bradley said that the allies held only 10 yards of beach after six hours of battle.

Said Obama: "In our age of instant commentary, the invasion would have been swiftly and roundly declared — as it was by one officer — 'a debacle.'"

Obama, who has often urged his own critics to take the long view, added: "A race to judgment does not take into account the courage of free men."

As it happened, the Allies came ashore on D-Day, and went on liberate Europe.

Urp! Shouldn't have eaten those snails.

Obama Reminds the Greatest Generation How He's Changing the Military
June 6, 2014 - 6:40 AM
By Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - At a ceremony commemorating some of the bravest Americans of World War II, President Barack Obama reminded the "greatest generation" how the U.S. military has changed under his command, by slipping in references to immigrants and women.

Speaking at Normandy, President Barack Obama singled out three veterans who stormed the beaches under heavy fire.

These were "the men who were willing to lay down their lives for people they never met," Obama said. "Wilson and Harry and Rock, they are here today," the president continued, as he briefly described their service to their country.

"Gentlemen, I want each of you to know that your legacy is in good hands," he told the three men. "For at a time when it has never been more tempting to pursue narrow self-interest, to slough off common endeavor, this generation of Americans -- a new generation...has chosen to do their part as well."

"Rock, I want you to know that Staff Sgt. Melvin Sabillo Martin, who is here today, is following in your footsteps. He just had to become an American first. Because Melvin was born in Honduras, moved to the United States, joined the Army. After tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he was reassigned to the 82nd Airborne. And Sunday, he'll parachute into Normandy.

"Wilson, you should know that Specialist Janice Rodriguez, who joined the Army not even two years ago, was assigned to the 101st Airborne and just last month earned the title of the 101st Airborne Division Air Assault Soldier of the Year. And that's inspiring, but not surprising, when the women of today's military have taken on responsibilities, including combat, like never before."

Obama said the current "9/11 generation" of service members also "felt something, they answered some call, they said, I will go. They too chose to serve a cause that's greater than self, many even after they knew they'd be sent into harm's way."

On a day dedicated to the elderly veterans of Normandy, Obama also thanked active-duty troops, including Melvin and Janice, for their service: "They are a reminder that the tradition represented by these gentlemen continues."

The remark was greeted with silence.

In January 2013, Obama -- invoking "fairness and equality" -- announced that he was "moving to open" more military positions, including ground combat units, to women.

And the administration reportedly is planning to let illegal aliens serve in the military if they qualify for amnesty under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

O/T, I'm watching the 70 year D-Day Anniversary Commemoration from France live.
It's been an absolutely beautiful ceremony. Outstanding speeches and remembrances.
Many world leaders are there...HRH Elizabeth II, Putin, Merkel, Brown, Harper, and even Fauxbama!
Believe it or not, he's CHEWING GUM!
At such a solemn ceremony, if it were anyone else, I'd be aghast!
Butt, the expectations are rock bottom low, so I guess it's no big deal.
Probably nico-gum, anyway.
Gotta get back to it.

I think he is so used to having that gum in his mouth, he is no longer even aware he is chewing it. No one ever taught him any manners. He wouldn't have gotten a normal job if he was chewing that gum in the interview. Butt he is the messiah so he can so whatever he wants, I suppose.

Obama Chomps On Gum During D-Day Anniversary Event…Update: France Not Happy

Would it kill this guy to show some respect?

Update:

Obama was caught on camera chewing gum while clapping during the welcome for Her Majesty the Queen. He kept chewing throughout the ceremonies, also managing to anger France. French twitter blew up (not to mention British and American reaction):

Honestly, have any one of you ever saw him chomping on gum before?   Not me.   I suspect it was suggested he do so, so he doesn’t do a John Kerry and nod off during the ceremony.

This juvinile smart-ass has no respect for anything. Everything is a joke to him.

And he is laughing at us all. All of us, including the idiots and fools who got him elected. He will wind up screwing everyone before it is over. He has no respect, and he has no loyalty to anything except himself. This is an artifact of his damaged childhood. It reminds me of the movie Scarface.

Can we compare his speech to the Gettysburg address when Lincoln talked about how he was going to change the military and the country?  Well - I guess Lincoln didn't do that, did he?  But Lincoln did give a long speech.  Well, I guess it wasn't so long, about 2 1/2 minutes, about 272 words, of which only 65 were more than one syllable.  That isn't much of a speech.  But he did talk mostly of what the troops had done there; he didn't talk once about himself.  But surely historians will rate Obama's speech as one of the greatest of all time.  It isn't Obama's fault Lincoln didn't know about what memorial speeches are supposed to be and take the time to talk about himself. :peeonobama:

Obama Dares to ‘Honor’ WWII Vets By Touting The Future of Illegal Aliens in the Military

6 June 2014 / 76 Comments

Did Obama seriously have the audacity to stand up at a ceremony commemorating the brave Americans of World War II, and say that others (i.e. – illegal aliens) would be ‘following in their footsteps?’  (As soon as they become American citizens, of course.)

Am I allowed to say this?   Am I allowed to say, “WHAT AN ASS?!?”   If I’m not allowed, then please forgive me for expressing what most of us are thinking.

Don’t you dare stand there as the ‘Commander in Chief’ and tout your politics and think you’re honoring the men who endured and sacrificed so much.

We’ve all heard, and as CNN reports:  “The administration reportedly is planning to let illegal aliens serve in the military if they qualify for amnesty under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.”

But, THAT was not the time, nor the place to boast of YOUR idea of the ‘new generation’ of service men and women.

ASS!

Twitter Chews Up Obama after Gum Gaffe at Solemn D-Day Ceremony

Yes, our Dear Leader, Barack Obama was actually chewing GUM at the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France today. Unbelievable.

And he did it repeatedly…

As the BBC reported:

Social media users tore into Barack Obama on Friday after the US president was seen chewing gum during solemn ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

People took to Twitter to denounce Obama’s “shameful” and “vulgar” chewing, with one user attacking him as a “lout.”

“Obama do you want a Coke too while chewing gum while the Marseillaise is being played?” said toto_des_bois, referring to the French national anthem.

“The Queen arrives and you have Obama chewing gum, #DDay70″ said diminou, another Twitter user.

Other reactions:

French Twitter was, to put it mildly, not happy. Translation is hardly required…

You don’t need to speak the language to pick up on the anger conveyed by “classe,” “merde,” and, of course, all caps.

Stay classy, Mr. President.

Of course. What better way to turn the American military against America than to fill it with foreign nationals. It is obvious.

Obama said he is going to fire 30,000 military people this year. And yet, he is campaigning to get 'illegals' to enlist. What does this say?

He wants to purge the current military from stupid Christian White people, and replaced it with illegals? Why would he do that unless he envisions a service where the military will be called out to fight against America, Americans.

How much do you want to bet that ALL the people purged from the military are White? and Christian?

This is Obama subverting the military, and turning it into his own personal police force.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
