A group of Americans are demanding that Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl be punished after the Obama administration secured his release from the Taliban in Afghanistan.
“Punish Bowe Bergdahl for being AWOL / Desertion during Operation Enduring Freedom,” reads the title of the petition created on the White House's website.
The petition was created on Saturday, May 31 after President Obama announced that the United States had secured Bergdahl's release.
“Army member Bowe Bergdahl 'who did not earn the rank of SGT' went AWOL / Deserted the United States Army in June 2009,” the petition reads. “Punish Bowe Bergdahl for walking off base with intent to not support the War On Terror.”
The United States freed five Taliban prisoners in exchange for Bergdahl’s release.
“Bowe Bergdahl broke several Articles under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and needs to be punished not rewarded,” the petition claims. “He is not a hero and is directly responsible for several military members [sic] death. Bring punishment to Bowe Bergdahl and let the public know that the military holds all members to the same standard.”
Currently the petition has 1,799 signatures -- over 98,000 more signatures are needed to reach the goal of 100,000 signatures by June 30 in order for the White House to respond.
