Gay, transgender Americans to get markers in parks

NEW YORK (AP) — The announcement Friday that the National Park Service will begin installing markers at places of importance to the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans is a step toward including them in the national narrative — and components of education, supporters said.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell made the announcement Friday at the Stonewall Inn, the scene of riots in June 1969 that are widely credited with starting the modern gay rights movement. Stonewall was made a national historic landmark in 2000, and June is widely celebrated as LGBT Pride Month.

Jewell said the nation is on a journey to expand civil rights to historically underrepresented groups. The process on LGBT issues mirrors efforts the service already has undertaken to preserve and promote locations that reflect the roles of Latinos, Asian-Americans and women in U.S. history.

"Part of the job of the National Park Service is to tell this story," she said.

The initiative comes after years of debate about how LGBT people fit into America's historical narrative and whether they should be included in textbooks.

California state legislators passed a first-in-the-nation law in 2011 requiring public schools to teach students about the contributions of LGBT Americans in state and U.S. history. The law was supposed to take effect in January 2012, but because of budget cuts that have put state textbook funds on hold until 2015, few districts have begun to implement it.

Meanwhile, eight states have laws on the books that ban schools from teaching anything positive about homosexuality, said Eliza Byard, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.

Arizona, for example, requires that no school district shall include curriculum material that "portrays homosexuality as a positive alternative life-style," while South Carolina says gay relationships can be discussed only "in the context of instruction concerning sexually transmitted diseases."

Byard attended the news conference in front of the Stonewall, in Manhattan's Greenwich Village neighborhood, and praised the park service initiative. Students will now learn about LGBT history on field trips to park service sites, she said.

"Symbolically it's hugely important that now LGBT history is officially part of the national narrative," Byard said. "This is part of what our federal government will identify, preserve and single out."

The park service is convening a panel of 18 scholars who will be charged with exploring the LGBT movement's story in areas such as law, religion, media, civil rights and the arts. The committee will identify relevant sites and its work will be used to evaluate them for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, designation as National Historic Landmarks or consideration as national monuments.

The scholars' study, which is expected to be completed by 2016, is being financed with $250,000 from the Gill Foundation, a major donor to gay civil rights causes.

Sheesh......

just carry a little paint, or some other suitable substance, and use it liberally, so to speak.

I am so glad to hear that at least our national park system will not be a victim of the pervasive politicization going on with this administration. /s

They want to eliminate Bible scriptures from National Parks... What are the new markers going to say " Welcome to Sodom and Gomorrah"?..
That should make a nice target for a lighting bolt..
You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.

I've been thinking that there can't be more than a handful of situations where being homosexual had anything to do with anything historical.

That means these PC moron/thugs are going to have to insert sex into situations where it has no relevance just to get their agenda carried out.

Leftists have become religious zealots who are forcing their offensive dogma on the majority who don't believe in it.

(Meanwhile, how many markers documenting the abolition of slavery bother to mention that a large group of abolitionists were avid Christians......which is extremely relevant?  Think that will ever happen??     **nononono*)

They won't have to go that far.  They'll simply do their best to "find" historical figures whom they can cast as being homosexuals and then have any historical plaques that mention those people updated to say that, in addition to all the wonderful things they did, they also happened to be homosexual, even though these peoples' sexual proclivities had nothing to do with any of the wonderful things they did.

Do you think they'll do that about Obama?   :smokin:

Nah. Plaques celebrate achievements. Obama comes up empty on that scale.
