Unemployment Down Because 47% Quit Looking for Jobs

President Obama has been strutting around like a banty rooster in a hen house since his unemployment figures began dropping this year. He has been crowing about all of the new jobs that he has helped create even though no one seems to know what jobs he’s talking about. He keeps killing the 10,000 jobs that would be created if only he would give his approval to the Keystone Pipeline project.
Does the decline in the unemployment rate really indicate that there are more jobs as Obama wants you to believe?
Not according to a recent Harris Poll of unemployed people. They found that 47% had given up looking for a job. Forty-six present said they hadn’t had a job interview in the past month and 23% said they hadn’t had a job interview since 2012.
Perhaps the most telling figure was that only 20% of the people that responded said they were receiving unemployment benefits. That means that 80% were no longer receiving unemployment, which also means that they are no longer accounted for in Obama’s unemployment figures. More men are unemployed than women, 57% v. 43% and over half are under 40 years of age.
The Harris Poll was conducted for Express Employment Professionals. Bob Funk, CEO of Express and former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City commented about the results, saying:
"This survey shows that millions of Americans are at risk of falling into the trap of prolonged unemployment, and it should give policymakers a greater sense of urgency to focus on the singular goal of creating jobs. We can take heart that in these difficult times the American spirit of confident hopefulness endures, but we can’t accept this status quo — not for our country, not for our unemployed neighbors."
Additional results from the poll indicated that 44% of the unemployed said that they are not willing to relocate to another city and 60% said they would not relocate to another state. In times past, more people were willing to relocate for a job, but that trend is not as popular now as it once was.
However, for those that are willing to relocate, they may want to look for jobs in Wisconsin and North Dakota. Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin has been living up to his campaign promises by turning and $3.6 billion state deficit into a $2 billion state surplus. Walker’s Blueprint for Prosperity has been creating more jobs and the state’s unemployment level has been steadily dropping as a result.
As for North Dakota, the boon in the oil industry has taken the state from 38th in the nation for income ranking to 6th in the nation. Prior to 2006, North Dakota residents averaged 14% below the national average personal income and now they are running about 25% above the national average.
Interestingly, both Wisconsin and North Dakota have Republican governors and Republican controlled legislatures. They have enacted responsible economic legislation that has helped to make their states more successful. On the other side of the coin, nearby states like Illinois are run by Democratic governors and legislatures that are as fiscally irresponsible as the Obama administration. Their states are suffering from deficit budgets and higher than average unemployment. In fact, a number of companies that were in Illinois have been relocating to Wisconsin because of the tax incentives and overall positive economic outlook. Need I say more?
So what’s really behind the lower unemployment figures that Obama has been boasting about? It’s not more jobs! It’s the fact that people are giving up looking and have exhausted their unemployment benefits. When the extended unemployment benefits ended, it dropped millions off of the roles resulting in lower unemployment figures.
