U.S. News released its 2014 Best High Schools rankings last month, providing information on more than 19,400 eligible public high schools from across the country. This included awarding gold, silver and bronze medals, calculated using a combination of state assessments and college readiness scores.
In addition to the overall national rankings and rankings of the top charter and magnet schools, the high schools data present an opportunity to look closely at how states performed both in terms of number and percent of schools with medals.
The map below, which can be sorted by year, provides a national view of Best High Schools rankings distribution as well as a peek into state data across two years of rankings. The data reveal a few overarching trends.
California and Maine each had 22.2 percent of their eligible schools earn gold and silver medals in 2014 – the highest in the nation. Connecticut followed next, with 19.7 percent. Five states had 1 percent or less of schools earn gold or silver medals.
The range of these percentages is lower than in 2013, when California hit 27.8 percent – the highest of any state across either year – and Maryland reached 25.7 percent.
