'Virgin killer' Elliot Rodger became addicted to a mood-altering drug and was the target of online bulling, a friend of the Isla Vista shooter has revealed.
Chris Akin met Rodger on a trip to Isla Vista a few years ago and they skyped weekly. But he noticed a drastic change in the 22-year-old UCSB student's temperament after he started taking the muscle-building supplement creatine.

Akin, of Chicago, told the Mirror that Rodger took the drug every day in an attempt to build muscle mass to attract girls and to drown his sorrows after losing a friend in a freak accident earlier this year.

While not illegal, some users of creatine have experienced side effects such as violent mood swings and depression.

Akin says Rodger started taking the drug after a mutual friend died in a body-building accident, trying to lift a 250kg weight.

Rodger drowned his sorrows in the drug, but also used it to build muscle mass which he thought would make him more attractive to women.

Interesting, his manifesto didn't mention any of that.

Also, I didn't know mood changes were an effect of Creatine. It isn't a steroid, it is a supplement that causes muscles to retain water. It does have a lot of other side effects, but not 'mood altering'.

Probably another story teller looking for his 15 minutes.

That was my first thought as well, but if he was taking bodybuilding supplements, and given his vanity issues it would not surprise me, then it wouldn't be a stretch to presume that he was taking other supplements as well. Testosterone and other steroids are known to cause mood alterations, including fits of "'roid rage." Such behavior would be consistent with his actions.
