FBI: More People Killed by Fists and Hammers Than With “Assault” Rifles

Posted By Philip Hodges on May 26, 2014 | 1 Comment

Not much has changed since the last time these statistics were released showing the numbers for 2011. Breitbart reported on the latest stats from the FBI:

With newer crime statistics now out for 2012, Breitbart News can report that more people are killed each year with fists and hammers than are killed with rifles or shotguns.

According to the FBI, there were a total of 625 murders committed with rifles and shotguns in 2012. That breaks down to 322 murders that were rifle related and 303 that were shotgun related.

The total number of deaths committed with fists, hammers, and other blunt objects was 1,196. That breaks down to 518 murders related to hammers and blunt objects and 678 related to fists.

Taken together, the rate of murder by fists and hammers was nearly 100 percent higher than the rate of murder by rifles or shotguns.

Liberals are quick to point out that Breitbart didn’t mention handgun homicides, and that if they had included them, it would have shown far more murders committed by handguns than by hammers and fists, etc. No doubt.

But I think the article is addressing the paranoia, fueled by the media and the political establishment, surrounding so-called assault rifles. Viewers are led to believe that AR-15s are especially dangerous weapons, whose only purpose is to kill little kids. Never mind the fact that a semi-automatic rifle functions the same way as a semi-automatic pistol. They just look different.

Liberals also hate these types of comparisons. They say it’s not fair to compare hammers and fists to guns. They say that hammers and fists serve other purposes, and that the only purpose of a gun is to kill someone.

It’s true that hammers are not meant to be used as weapons. But they certainly double nicely as them. They’re metal, weighted and top-heavy, and sharp on the claw. It’s very easy to do some serious or fatal damage to someone. The fact that the hammer wasn’t meant to be used as a weapon doesn’t mean that people won’t use it as they would a knife or a gun. People use a hammer or a bat to kill someone when they don’t have a gun. Who cares what the particular object was designed for? The point is, people use whatever instrument they can get their hands on when they want to kill someone.

The intended purpose for an object is irrelevant. I thought anti-gunners were all about saving lives. If they banned all guns, would they be satisfied with (hypothetical) statistics showing that, say, 85% of all murders are committed with hammers, just because hammers aren’t meant to be used as murder weapons? If they’re consistent with their “saving lives” goal, they’d try to ban anything that can be used as a deadly weapon.

No set of statistics, no matter how well-sourced, nor any argument, no matter how well-reasoned will ever serve to slake the appetite of those who wish to rule you.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn
