Barber Breaks Down Report of IRS Workers Spending 500K Hours on ‘Union Activities’

The Washington Free Beacon‘s Ellison Barber broke down a new report Thursday revealing IRS workers spent an astounding 521,725 hours on union activities in fiscal year 2013 at an estimated cost of $23.5 million to U.S. taxpayers.

Appearing on Fox News Channel’s Your World, Barber said this behavior was actually legal under federal law due to the allowance for the agency’s unionized employees to participate in “official time.” So long as their time was spent on matters related to “conditions of employment,” such as grievances, negotiations or formal meetings with management, that qualified.

“Typically, the way they decide whether or not that’s legal is that the unionized workers will have an agreement and come up with a negotiated time to have for official time during their work day, and that seems like that’s what’s happened here,” she said. “You hear about this money being spent, and you think maybe it shouldn’t be happening. Well, what are lawmakers are going to do about it? Because it’s legal, it doesn’t really seem like there’s much that they actually can do about it.”

Is anyone looking after shop itself, host Neil Cavuto wondered.
