"Big Bank Hank" Jackson, member of first hip-hop group to chart a top 40 hit, dies at 57

A member of the Sugarhill Gang, whose pioneering hit "Rapper's Delight" brought hip hop to mainstream audiences 35 years ago, died Tuesday of complications from cancer.

"Big Bank Hank," whose real name was Henry Jackson, died early Tuesday in Englewood, New Jersey, according to David Mallie, who manages the two surviving Sugarhill Gang members. The New York native was 57.

A beefy, boisterous presence onstage, Hank handled vocals in the early to middle portion of "Rapper's Delight," which despite its extended length -- one version was more than 14 minutes long -- became the first rap song to reach the Top 40 on the U.S. Billboard charts.

Mike Nichols, Acclaimed Director of 'The Graduate,' Dies at 83

Quote
Mike Nichols, one of America's most celebrated directors, whose long, protean résumé of critic- and crowd-pleasing work earned him adulation both on Broadway and in Hollywood, died on Wednesday. He was 83.

His death was announced in a statement by the president of ABC News, James Goldston.

Dryly urbane, Mr. Nichols had a gift for communicating with actors and a keen comic timing, which he honed early in his career as half of the popular sketch-comedy team Nichols and May. He accomplished what Orson Welles and Elia Kazan, but few if any other directors have: He achieved popular and artistic success in both theater and film. He was among the most decorated people in the history of show business, one of only a handful to have won an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy.

[float=right][/float]Ken Weatherwax, best known as Pugsley Addams, dies at 59

The actor stuck with the Pugsley role over the years ... long after the original TV show went off the air in 1966. He was the voice of Pugsley in a '70s version -- and played Pugsley Sr. in an 'Addams' TV movie. He eventually started working behind the scenes as a grip and set builder -- but he still made appearances at fan conventions.

Weatherwax died of a heart attack.

Mandy Rice-Davies, one of the women at the centre of the Profumo affair, has died aged 70 after a short battle with cancer.

The former showgirl and her friend Christine Keeler became household names when the scandal that rocked Harold Macmillan's Tory government was exposed in 1963.

A spokesman for her publicist, the Hackford Jones PR agency, said: "It is with deep sadness that the family of Marilyn Foreman, also known as Mandy Rice-Davies, have confirmed that she passed away yesterday evening after a short battle with cancer.

"They have asked for their privacy to be respected and no further comment will be made."
